View Full Version : Disappearing Beveled Text Polygons

Having a strange issue when beveling text. All appears normal in Modeler but the front faces of some
letters wont render, regardless of how I have the surfaces set...double sided etc.
Beveling other shapes works fine, just seems to happen with text and only on some letters.
Im stumped. I hope someone has a fix to try?

Caveat: I'm pretty rusty still after a number of years away from LightWave. If the text object is not all triangles, check Polygon statistics for non-planar polygons. This next may be an obsolete notion - zoom in on any corners and curves and see if you have any vertices located such that they cause crossovers in the sides of the associated polygons. Move those points to eliminate the crossovers. If seems appropriate you could also merge points.

Thanks Chuck. Not seeing any triangles. I just used the bevel tool on a piece of text I made in Modeler.
I would think the bevel tool is defective if it produces polygons that won’t render.

Bevel. Then triple to avoid render errors from polys over 4 sides.

Post an image, if possible.

Yes, that's just one issue among many with Bevel. It's an area where Modeler's been in desperate need of rework for ages, alas.

If you really want to depress yourself, take a look at C4D's Bevel tool (https://youtu.be/Rnvvk8_llp8).

Yes, that's just one issue among many with Bevel.

I doubt it's Bevel issue. It's very easy tool.
Polygon normal vector is calculated from 1st, 2nd and last vertex.
If somehow (any) tool is generating one of them in the same location as second one, it'll result in making normal vector which has length 0 (instead of 1).
And such polygon won't render correctly anymore.

Thanks all. Seems moving a few overlapping points around fixes the issue...but what a pain.

There are cases where certain arrangements of beveled intersections can wind up generating overlapping points/edges (perhaps even polys) using Bevel, depending on the precise geometry involved. AFAICT, such problems typically arise when you bevel segments close enough together they cause the resultant beveled+in/extruded edge segments to cross over each other, etc.

Bevel++ is very powerful for this, I use it almost exclusively on text

Yup...I want a serious improvment on the beveling tools, and yup...C4D bevel looks awesome.

Blenders bevel isnt as good as C4D, but you can at least check the clamp overlap.

It needs a fix - right now it's not generating the right font look/curves. So it won't look like the font you have selected. Sorry, but I had to mention this in case someone jumped on it. Function wise it's great but had to give up using it because of the font issue.

Any hope for an update Sensei? :)

No, seriously: someone actually came up with a tool that fixes exploded bevel operations - it made me laugh out loud. And hey, as long as we have an Unf*ck tool, why not also have an Unbevel command?
