So, complex triangulated meshes with one surface (for example obj or stl) - they are a serious pain to divide up into surfaces. Does anyone know of any tools or plugins to help with selecting areas of polygons? For example with an angle difference limit or some other genius method of selecting areas (like a photoshop magic wand).

Check https://www.lightwave3d.com/assets/plugins/list/ for all kinds of modeler selection tools.

You also have commands like select connected and select connected.. Can also use right mouse button and draw a selection around the viewports.

It is a pain! Lightwave really does need some intuitive selection tools. Usually what i'll do is a combination of select loop and grow selection.

If it works cleanly you can try to merge triangles to hope for a quad mesh, then select a loop and grow the selection (shift + ]). If the whole object is welded together you can make a loop at the part where you want the sepeate surface change, cut it, paste it back in, then select the remaining portion of the part you want separate, hit "]" to select all and weld it back together and resurface etc.

Like so many other important aspects of navigation/modeling functionality, selection support is another area where LW's native abilities have fallen direly behind that of most other popular commercial 3D packages (and Blender). Unfortunately, there's no tangible evidence of that situation improving any time soon.

In 2018 (not sure when it actually made the first appearance) in the Selection tab there is Specialty section you can select by normal and dial in your deviation angle from what you have selected.
Tho as always this would be way, way more useful if it was interactive.

The analogy to PS would be a way to select areas with an initial normal direction taking into account overall surface deviation. Sort of like taking curvature map into account while you iterate over the polygon selection.
Not sure that's possible with LW ?

Thanks for the replies! Sorry I should have been clearer/given an example. So yes this a welded mesh (stl file), obviously lasso and grow selection have been my go-to's in this scenario, but it's slow and fiddly:

@sensei I'm not sure trueselect would help in this scenario

(just for context this is a 30mm miniature)

use a UV map or use Parts.

Another way is to use a morph. just flick morph on and explode it.

UV is easiest.

Yeah UV ended up being the way to go, though it was still pretty fiddly.

Interesting. IMO there's a misfeature :devil: in that the non-interactive UI presents differently if you have some polys selected versus not having any selected. QUITE a difference. IMO, a mistake, in that it's making the functioning of the tool less discoverable.

Rather than completely hiding the functionality, if it were ghosted at least the user would have a clue there's something there besides selection along axes.

There's an UPDATE button -- ::sigh::. So dumb: why FORCE the user to hit update when there's an entire computer right there perfectly able to hit the UPDATE button itself? JFC.
