This is a tricky question, and a bit contradictory.

If I light a scene with say area lights and they are hidden from the camera, why would I want to see the area lights reflected in the window glass and any reflective surfaces.

My feelings are that there should be a "Hidden From Reflections" tick box and the light relections become the type of reflections we had in 2015.

It's most disconcerting to see a mass of lights reflected in windows when nothing is visible in the scene.

Has anyone got any trick to get around this?

If you uncheck "Affect Specular", the light's reflection becomes invisible.

Many times, people want to add lights to create reflections on an object's surface, but don't want the actual light to be seen, so they uncheck "Visible to Camera".

I hope I'm understanding your question correctly.

It would be nice if it was on a per object basis and not globally for all the objects in a scene.
