I'm been commuting between the UK and Belgium, and decided I really needed a complete turbo nutter bustard laptop so I could keep doing graphics effectively. This is what I bought:

https://www.chillblast.com/chillblast-photo-oc-mobile-5-photo-editing-laptop.html
And upgraded it to 32Gb of memory and a 2 Tb hard drive.

142138

The rendering speed is very impressive, and all that memory means it can really deliver on high polygon scenes. I just tried comparing my desktop on a test scene, and it's about 30% faster than the desktop, which is kess than a year old and was far from cheap...

But the real delight is the screen - before I saw this one, I was not aware you could get 4k screens on laptops. The colour is extremely natural looking too, with very good viewing angles.

It always seems to take me a few weeks to get everything set up the way I want, with all the plugins and software, but so far it's a real delight.

Minor niggles - the fingerprint reader is really weak compared to my iphone, the life on battery is rather short, and the sound is very tinny indeed. But good earphones are cheap...

Nice piece of kit. I especially like this section in the specs:

Warranty

• 5 Year Warranty, 2 Years Collect & Return (12 months screen, 6 months battery) UK only

A 5 year warranty on any piece of tech, even with the inevitable exclusions and limitations that will be included, is good for a laptop :-)

Seems like a fast laptop.

You could also consider the Dell XPS15 4k Touch, very smooth design and fast. I love using it, along with the Macbook Pro 15. Don't know how prices are in your area.

Dell XPS15

Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Processor 8. Generation
Windows 10 Home (64*Bit)
16*GB DDR4, 2.666*MHz
M.2-2280-PCIe-SSD, 512GB

Or

Intel® Core™ i9-8950HK Processor 8.*Generation
Windows 10 Home (64*Bit)
32*GB DDR4, 2.666*MHz
PCIe-SSD, 2*TB
15.6" UltraSharp-4K-Ultra-HD-Display (3.840x2.160)

Note there are some cheaper models that don't have the 4k screen which is absolutely amazing with 100% Adobe RGB.

Due to its thin bezels it is more like a 14" size and quite light with great build quality.

I think it's a bit late to consider a different one!

I like the model displayed in Lightwave......nice ship...:)

Completely off topic...why are intel chips i3,i5,i7,i9...Why no even numbers?

Concur, i have the XPS 15 9560, full spec, lovely bit of kit. The only downside is the video camera position.

Actually, as I have the attention of some people who know powerful hardware...

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced video card for my desktop, that will handle 4k?
I'm not after state for the art, say something along the lines of best bang for the buck at about $250...

Cheers,
Nick

I would not go anything below a GTX 980, technically a 960 supports 4k. For this price you may be able to get a 1050 ti

With some more money you could get a 1070. Thing is once you look at a 1070, for the price difference you may as well get a 1080, decissions, decissions.

Indeed sadly i am not in the UK till thursday. The suggestion was more aimed at starbase1 but lack of caffeine intake today (only two mugs of tea at time of posting) means I'm not thinking and typing as clearly as I should be :twak:

Well, as I am working in Belgium and home at the weekend, what I have been doing is ordering for delivery to an amazon pickup location on wednesday, which generally means i can collect them on Saturday morning... or delivering to a local friendif that's not an option...

Will do - it may not be for a while though, it's for the home PC and as I am mpow mainly working from the laptop, it's not a priority.
