Hehe, see they still haven't resolved the issue that the vertex paint "rotation widget" (upper right) has mouse handling reversed (both X & Y) versus how it's handled by similar widget in Modeler perspective viewport (alt-mouse works the same in both views, thankfully). I suspect the idea is that one's rotating the object, while other's ostensibly rotating the view, but nonetheless it really should be consistent (it always takes me a sec to re-calibrate from viewport to Vertex Paint if using that widget).

Very cool, though, thanks for that!

BTW, one thing that confused me slightly was your starting with "Bit tricky but let's try it." as first sentence, almost sounded like you clipped off beginning of your initial sentence. Probably not worth effort to fix/change, though.
