View Full Version : How can I create an effector dissolve effect in 2018?

I'm looking for the ability to animate an effector of some sort so that I can selectively dissolve out objects and/or surfaces in 2018 in a fashion similar to what we used to do with the Worley Acid plugin in previous versions of Lightwave.

Thanks.

First thing that comes to mind is to use a procedural texture, animated, with increasing strength and intensity on the Transparency channel.

you mean such things?

No. I mean like Worley's Acid, Prem's Surface Effector, or Dennis Pontonniers Marker Pen Plugin.

These all use a NULL or object position to apply an effect to a given surface. You can use it to draw onto a surface a color or texture, or to dissolve out the surface or otherwise selectively change a surfaces attributes.

aaahh .. NOW I understand ..
have tried such things long time before :

let's ask master Bryphi, if he have some ideas for LW2018

That's going in the right direction. However that looks like 2015 not 2018, and the nodes are a bit different. Additionally, it is very unclear to me how the instancing is involved and how it is that the sphere object (looks like an instance is being drawn out/extruded in layout. So lots of questions here, but at least you've provided some clues that I can investigate.

Thanks

DP Marker Pen still works in 2018 if you use a Standard material.

Jay,

did you find a solution for this? I basically want a sphere of transparency to follow a null in LW 2018 and act like Surface Effectors did (way back in the day...)

May also work inside of nodes...that is if you use the layer nodes and add the " standard " dpont rman textures...but may be easier to just use standard material, unless adding it through the nodes gives additional options.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work feeding a Scalar Layer with a DP Marker Pen Procedural into a Principled BSDF Transparency input. In LW2018.0.6, it crashes Layout when I try to step off of Frame 0 to move the MarkerNull around, either with right-arrow or with an explicit frame number. I tried setting up the MarkerNull before applying the MarkerPen Procedural, but it still crashes Layout when stepping off Frame 0. No real way of debugging it - VERY time consuming to try variations!

Attached is a sample LW2018.0.6 scene using DP Marker Pen on a Standard material, which works fine.

DP Marker Pen is part of the RMan texture collection available here:

http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/Textures.htm

and I hope that Denis can make an arrangement with LWDG to convert / port most or all of his nodes to LW2018! Remember to support Denis financially if you can.

P.S. Remember that to have 100% Transparency, the Refraction Index on the surface must be 1.0, and the Specularity must be 0.

That is why I stated.."It may work"
Glad you tested.
Marker pen could also cause some crashing in 2015 as well, I felt it was unstable to use.

Yes, I did "Save Scene" quite frequently when setting up Marker Pen in LW2015 and before. The one function that crashed Layout consistently was copy-n-paste (e.g. from one Surface to another).

It's a really great tool for many effects, though.

You can create an emitter from your null and use distance from particle to do it.

142590

It will crash VPR sometimes, and it doesn't remember what set of particles you have assigned it to when you save it out.

Nice! Works great on Transparency using the Alpha scalar output.

Thanks,

Nice tip, thanks XswampyX. Can you bug report the particle assignment issue and I'll do the same here as it's still the case for 2018.0.6? It'll be really handy for drawing on Instances and deformations! I had other workarounds but this is great!

Ta!

I will report the bug....
