Introducing Tank, a new short film from Red Giantís Chief Creative Officer, Stu Maschwitz. In a visual homage to vector arcade games of the 80ís (like Battlezone and Star Wars), Tank tells the story of a team of pilots that must take on a weapon of mass destruction in a battle to save their world. Putting aside current 3D modeling techniques, Stu looked to the past and built the world of Tank entirely in Adobe After Effects, using math, code, and hundreds of hours of painstaking animation work. Sometimes using the wrong tool for the job is the best thing.

I understand the concept, but man, doing this just because someone can is so pointless as it's the final result that counts for the end viewer. I could aninate the same line in say 1 minute and render in next one, hitting two minutes for the shot and have exactly same result.

Would have been cooler ih hand drawn and animated or better yet, built with cardboard or whatever.

I once did similar thing as I was bored, creating 3d lines in AE and building icosahedrons etc. Just for giggles tho.

I like it. I did something similar but not as good using solids in After Effects to create a 3D cube world, I suppose the advantage of using After Effects over a 3D app is seeing the thing come together as a sequence while you work, you don't have to render stuff until you've finished it all and your look development is real time. Obviously building a cube in AE is more cumbersome than in 3D though, keeping tabs on all the layers and comps becomes overwhelming.
