View Full Version : It COULD be a giant Rollerball

I'm trying to rig what is seemingly simple and almost have it but not sure where I'm going astray. It's the BB-8 character (Hmmm, wonder why this character) but heck it could be a giant RollerBall pen or beach ball too I suppose & has probably been done to death but oddly not finding anything worthwhile on how to go about it.

I thought I could just simply adapt the old Relativity tutorial for Dr. Wheel Rotater to use on a BB-8 model. For straight paths & those with only slight changes, it works fine. But something like a gentle “S” turn, I end up getting some “skating” and even reverse rotation for a few moments & then it corrects. At this point I'm not finding a logical reason or corresponding change elsewhere. I'm guessing some parenting issue that's not playing with the expressions correctly. Ah for the days of Worley & Wheelie, ...

I am using 2018 (.04) and not locked into any specific technique so if there's a nodal way to do this, please show me. Raycast? Bullet? Just wanted to explore the more traditional means first I guess.

Never used Relativity much either so it's all mostly new & it could be some quirk with in in 2018 I suppose. For example had to manually enter SELF and PARENT and terms like that as the UI's buttons for those sorts of items weren't adding them to the expressions as they used to. There could be other ticks.

Help? Suggestions?

Have a look at the liquid in a glass thread. Just put in it's head instead of the wine morph.

Ah, no it's not his head, it's the base roller to get it to repond to directional changes correctly.

But I'll file this away for another time.

Ahhh! Create a proxy hollow ball and stick another ball inside. Drag the inside ball around and let bullet work it our for you.

There was a tutorial I have for this, some time ago. Not sure where I got it from now
Look like a guy name Champ Lien - credit at end of Text file.
It came with links to free BB8 model but not sure if it still available

I can upload scene file - I built in LW2015 and I just check that it works in 2018-0-3

Thanx for the DOC file. I just skimmed it but there are some worthwhile tidbits to glean.

Up to you on the scene file. I'll have one soon but always nice to see other approaches.
