View Full Version : Import 3DS Mesh with textures into LW2018

I'm new to LW and have made several scientific models for work I'm doing. But now, I need to get a male human model and do a visualization with it. Not an animation, just set it up with other objects and render a still.

There are human 3d models out there complete with textures, most are 3DS. I know I can load the meshes into LW, but what about the textures and get them to map correctly on a human form? Is that possible?

Are they textured .OBJ ? I'm not familiar with 3DS files.

No, they're .jpg. I think the proper term is UV maps, because they are like a 2D pattern of all the body parts.

3DS is the old 3D Studio Max file format. LW2018 Modeler may import it just fine. Download the 3DS file and use File=>Load Object in Modeler, selecting the .3DS file. You'll probably want to specify a scale in the panel you're given when loading it (try Custom Scale of 1.0, since the default seems to be 10.0), and sanity check the size of the imported model. It will create a UV Texture called Imported3DS_UVs and map it to the JPG files on the channels indicated in the 3DS file (e.g. Color, Specular and Bump for the Hand below).

For example, I downloaded this human hand model:

Loaded it into Modeler and then saved it out as a Lightwave LWO file. Here's the render in LW2018 and a screenshot in Layout:

Good luck!

Thank you for the help. That worked very well.

Excellent! With old format files, there's always a potential the import functions won't work. Glad it worked for you!
