i would like the ability to drag images from a file browser directly into the node editor, upon which they are converted to image nodes.

i would also like the ability to have a user specified prefix and suffix system to allow for images to be categorized/defined by the users dependent on their projects naming convention, that specify what type of image equates to what type of texture.

for example:

tree_c.png is a colour texture
tree_s.png is a spec map
tree_n.png is a normal map

when these images are drag dropped into the node editor they are automatically converted to the correct image node type and set to the correct colour space.

colour space would also be set correctly if using exr or hdr.

this type of thing would speed up workflow a lot.
