View Full Version : Can I add extra points to an open curve?

At the ends?
At the middle?

I know I can just keep the points and then rebuild it, but it's a serious pain in this case to select all the points in the right order.

I've tried selecting it as a polygon, and using knife, but nothing phappens
Subdivide smooth (a long shot I know) also does nothing at all...

I believe there is a modeler command called add points that will do that.

My Extend Spline script adds a new point to the end of an open spline; It was written to help model hair guides, and I know it works from LW 9.6 thru LW 2018.

There's TrueArt's EasySpline plugin as well.

-Select the curve
-Go to Multiply>Subdivide>Add Points
-Click on the curve to add points

hope this helps

Dstorm has some free plugins that might help dividing curves, heres a showcase with pathdivider, there´s also another edit path tool in there not shown here....

Beside these valuable advice i would like to add one more and it is that you watch the video by Proton about curves, Sorry i can not find it.

Eric, prometheus or anyone else, will you plz elaborate?

the path edit tool is called path cut and available at dstorm for free,it has one button for adjusting division segments, and one for path editing adding points to a curve , you need to select the curve in poly mode, use path editor, and the position value slider to let your marker slide over the curve, when you are at the curve position you want to add a point, click mark, and that will either add a point or split the cureve depending on how you have set the edit mode in the path editor numeric panel.
http://www.dstorm.co.jp/dsproducts/FreePlugins/Modeler/PathEditor_PathDivider.html

and for some tricks, if you select your spline draw curve in polymode, then click on slice, you can simply use slice tool on the curve, as soon as you click slice, it will make the curve as straight polylines, hover over the curve and you will have a marker, left click to add a point then drop the tool and the curve line becomes a spline again, with a new point segment.

Edit..above tip with slice it may not be recommended, there are issues with that, best simple option is to simply use subdiv add points, if a selected curve is hard to view points on, go to display options/interface, check simple wireframe points and increase point size.

nice, didn't know :)

another option is to Toggle between Curves and 2 Point Poly chains >

both methods (plugins) are a must have...

Sorry guys i meant finding the link of the video of William Vaughan aka proton where he talks about curve.

To the gentleman starting thread, it is very valuable to take a look at it. it is about 5 to 8 mins i believe.

Indeed.

What would make sense to me is if KNIFE were enhanced to slice into Curves: it just seems natural, I'm always surprised it doesn't work. (2015.3) And it would, well, staunch slightly the proliferation of tools, i.e we wouldn't need ADD POINTS if KNIFE worked on Curves.

Lastly, if you are not on mac :(, you can try my free divide edge plugin: http://artssphere.com/plugins/divideedge.php
In edge mode select one or more sections and split them into 2 or more pieces.
One thing to keep in mind is that I did not write this with curves in mind so the location of new point(s) is interpolated linearly between the section's end points and will not fall exactly on the original curve. You may need to adjust the points after the cut. Well, at least this is another option to consider.
