Looks like Sasquatch is officially dead in 2018 (I couldn't get it to work) Shame because it still looks better than Fiber FX in most cases. How is camera matching in Houdini with Lightwave? I can't Use fiberfx in most of my work (it looks terrible). I would like to render hair in Houdini and composite in post... thoughts?

thoughts?
don't.

use LightWave, once you get over the hurdles it is worth it.

the render looks much way better than Sas
for short hair, check Kryslin's scripts >

Thanks for the scripts I'll give them a try.

Maybe contact Worley, and see if he is willing to update it? Worth a try if nothing else, worst you can get is a no.

Sasquatch hasn't worked properly in Lightwave for several versions (you need a separate 'Classic' camera for proper alpha) and there are many limitations (shadow mapping only, no motion vectors, etc.) compared to FiberFx. I'm not denying FiberFX had its own issues over the years but, IMO, it really is time to switch over. The new FiberFX renderer is so much more realistic than Sasquatch or 'classic' FiberFX ever was.

The one thing I missed from from Sas was the auto-comb feature, but as mentioned by erikals, Kryslin has written very useful tools for FiberFX that essentially provide this feature and more.

Ah. someone saves me the trouble of testing Sasquatch. "Alas, poor Sasquatch, I knew him well, a plug in of infinite jest and sorrow..."

The lScripts mentioned generate a bias map which simulates Sasquatch's quick combing feature, along with some spline generating and selection tools.

You can also use it to generate a simple vertex normal bias map (turn blend strength down to 0%) that should solve the flickering fur problem.

I think one of my jobs for the new year will be to move these over to Python, especially if Python scripts execute faster. QuickComb is a dog, and can get quite slow ( I know where the performance bottle neck is - generating vertex normal values). Likewise, I'd like to add parts functionality to it as well (A feature request).

A few things about bringing in old FFX objects:

1) Your fiber width, formerly an abstract percentage (based on 100% = 0.05mm, which comes straight from the documentation), is imported as a real world dimension...And the percentage is treated as Meters (so, a fiber whose width was 150% comes in at 1.5m...!) The default of .5mm is fine enough for soft fur, at least at low resolution.

2) There is no node editor for the new FFX, I'm going to make a feature request for it. I mainly used it for hooking a weight map up to length, but I'd do some stuff with the bias map, and adding some noise to tangle it up.

3) Fiber Length has changed. I'm going to make a support request to find out how fiber length is determined - if Sasquatch could give you a length based on percentage, so an FiberFX...

Kryslin, take a glance at this 53s video (https://vimeo.com/246015959) re FiberFX lengths by Oliver. Would that help ? :)

Someone beat me to it...

Looks like I have to buy the OD toolset. :)
