I was skimming the online docs for LW 2018 and in the Windows Installation section, I found

NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400 series or ATI X1600 (minimum)

which is a higher spec video card than what I have now.

Anybody else find any hardware "Didn't we tell you?"s?

I would ask a friend around where you live.. I'm sure someone have a newer one collecting dust. But even the cheapest cards today are newer than any of those, and you should be able to find one around $20-30 dollars that is still good enough.

any basic GeForce is recommended, Quadro not so much (never was)

not sure about ATI

advice, stick to a GeForce Gaming card, works the best in LightWave.

Oh, and there is a good reason why nVidia is better at OpenGL. Both of the guys who invented it, work there (or used to when I heard about it. But afaik they are still there)

seems to work fine with my GeFoce GT 620. I was half expecting to need to go out video card shopping today.

If 8400 is an upgrade for you I'm truly sorry to hear that. Here's hoping you find a craigslist listing for $50 that rocks your world! Maybe even a used 1050 for like $110.

My machines have Nvidia 970's which can be over-clocked (though I've never done it) in them. Would like to go to 1080's but price is too high for me at this time. My machines are 6 cores each. Next thing for me is more memory.

I have GeForce GT 430 here..
GT 710 which has 2x more cores cost less than $50

I use low-profile Quadro video card - Quadro K620 with 2Gb DDR3 ram. If your workstation is working 24/7 then the issue of electricity consumption may well interest you.

Okay, I currently have a GeForce GTX 650. I just assumed (And you know what THAT does!) because the model number was "higher", I needed to upgrade my video card. My bad.

As ever with 3D applications, it is easy to cofuse 'need' with 'want' :) I've been away from the field for a couple of years or so and the arrival of LW 2018 has motivated me to finally get back into it. My 3D PC can still happily run LW and any other app I care to install on it...but I would like to upgrade it to boost its performance a bit. Finances dictate otherwise right now, so I'm definitely in the 'want' camp....but a little voice keeps telling me I really 'need' to upgrade my Quadro K4000 card, increase my 24GB of RAM and replace my dual Xeon E5620 CPUs with a pair of X5675s. The much louder, quiet voice of reason will probably win by persuading me to throw £20 at RebelHill to get back up to speed on Nodes via his training course :D
