View Full Version : IFW to 2018: how

12-21-2017, 08:46 AM
The IFW set of textures seems to be out of the picture for 2018.

Please indicate in this thread if you have an interest (read: money in hand to update) in supporting Mr. Jennings getting his tools in 2018-working order.

Quite useful stuff.

My hand is up...

Ok for me :)

Very much so.

Absolutely. Happy to support the cause, though I'd also like NewTek to consider contracting him directly for longterm exclusive Lightwave development.

Must have! The development should be supported, and/or acquired and made a part of the package. Wonderful selection of textures that are going to be missed. Someone needs to pick up this ball and run with it.

I would also agree. Quite indespencible. I've had his plugs since they were first developed. I'd support him with a purchase.

The IFW set of textures seems to be out of the picture for 2018.

1) you don't know whether procedural textures will not work in LW 2018

2) you can be sure that shaders won't work.

3) you can be sure that LW v9...LW 2015.3 nodes won't work. But they can be with some effort converted.

4) make kickstarter or whatever crowd-funding public money collection.. ask him how much is needed.. $3k/m * 3m = $9k / 50 usd per person = 180 people will pay each $50. And he can spend 3m modifying code to new LW 2018 node system..

As I do like some of the IFW Nodal textures and use them, I'll raise my hand.

IFW library is a great advantage. Specially for environment, landscape and archiviz when you need to break your patterns and tiles.

Ok me too, depending how much. Of course.

Please include me too. Thanks!

would be interested, too...

As i have been emailed quite a few times I thought I would answer the thread directly.
When the 2018 version was announced I did work on the beta SDK for a while but it became apparent that the work involved in updating the plugins was significant.
It was also clear that I was also no longer selling any new licenses other than the odd one here and there.
Faced was hundreds of hours of work to update the plugins and an unknown amount of sales I took the decision not to perform any further updates.

I have been developing these plugins for over 15 years now and I have gotten to know a great bunch of people in various communities starting with Imagine and including all the Ligthwave guys.
However, the desire and need for procedural textures appears to, no longer be there and I don't think enough revenue can be developed to warrant the work required to update them.

I wouldn't say never but I think I would be looking for someone to simply purchase all the source and take over the development.

Thanks for replying to the thread and thanks for all the work you have contributed!

Count me in! I for one will definitely miss them, especially the feature that allowed me to shade separate tiles/rocks etc different colours, which I haven't seen elsewhere.

Perhaps DB&W could take them on ?

Thank you so much for responding.

Indeed, it is my hope that NewTek pick up your assets as I fear others will do as has been done in the past: take it away from us and make it "special" in another app.

Nonetheless, since Imagine, I've used your tools. Thank you.

Is there anything that WE, as a COMMUNITY can do to get Newtek or Someone Else interested in picking up the source assets to these shaders since RJJ is willing to sell them? I use them quite a bit in my work, and have supported the IFW2 shaders since day one with several upgrades and updates.

Thanks for letting us know. I sure wish NT wil take your last sentence in consideration.

Perhaps DB&W could take them on ?

What makes you think they have the cash or interest? There isn't a lot of money in LW development (as Richard has pointed out, there aren't enough new buyers to make the update profitable). The only real buyer I can see is Newtek themselves.

If NT buys IFW and includes them in a 2018 point upgrade I will upgrade.

Good idea ;)

IFW2 is outstanding! I honestly don't know why procedural haven't replaced UV, etc. For years procedural textures has been relegated to beginners yet I have seen some awesome surfaces made with just procedurals. I think it's the way to go. IFW2 nodes do have problems with 2018 but the layer procedurals still work. Image below is all procedural.
