Anyone know some good software to create a texture to cover a continent, or an entire planet? - Needs to be ultra hi-res, so there's some detailing

Are you asking about terrain generation packages (Terragen, Vue, WorldMachine, WorldCreator)? Or are you looking for something more like DEM maps for existing terrain? Or something else entirely?

Don't need to greate geometry, just very large images for textures.

Browsing online for high res earth textures perhaps? or does it need to be Generated, in such case, check these links..not just blender related..scroll down a bit and you got links to various generators..canīt tell which is free and which is not.
otherwise you can also render out your own textures from lightwave, if you specify a high resolution..you can use textured environment to do so, or just render out on a simply plane, the trick would however to get realistic results within all that tweaking.
Howler can also be an alternative, it costs, but not so much I think..havenīt tried it myself though, the author is also here in these forum from time to time.

Though for continents, I would look in to worldmachine really...
