Da Rules :

1. This is an open model competition. (Almost) anything goes!

2. You can use any modeling tool for detailing and suchlike, but please have used LW for a respectable portion of the basic build. 3rd party Plug-ins are highly encouraged.

3. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger. (For Lightwave wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php

4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread.

5. Include the following information in your post: Modeling Tool, approximate modeling time, and 3rd Party plug-ins used

6. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the modeling time.

*7. A "winner" will be more challenging to to pick with these updated rules, so we'll have to see how it goes.

8. Have fun! This is a community event designed to encourage you to keep modeling. Whether you're a new LightWave artist or a seasoned professional, or working with another modeling package altogether, working with these tools is the only way to get better.

This Challenge Topic: Spaceship Porn!

Description: Starships! Tie Fighters! Vipers! Space Battles! Stuff go Boom!

Channel your inner Matt Jefferies and strut your own design, or share your take on one of the iconic rides from popular science fiction fare.

You can leverage existing work or start from scratch, but I want it to be an asset you've created yourself. Bonus points for also showing it in a cool scene ('Splodeys!) but that's not necessary. Any software tools for detailing and the like are fair game but please have used LW for at least a fair part of the basic build. Any and all LW plugins are more than welcome.

I liked the format of the last challenge so I'm gonna keep that mostly intact (it couldn't be that I'm just lazy, nopenope). To wit:

1) It can be any model done at any time place or circumstance and detailed with any modeling program (but as noted above, please have used LW for a respectable part of the basic build)

2) It can be completed already or a work in progress

3) It does not have to be finished to win. It can remain as a work in progress. But we will go by the strict deadline rather than completion of the model.

4) Detailing sculpts are OK. Zbrush, Mudbox, 3D Coat, Blender, Modo, Maya or other.

5) Render in any program. Key Shot, Marmoset Toolbag for example. Anything. Inside or outside of LightWave. In your favorite painting app (Substance, 3Do, 3D Coat) or game engine ( Unreal, Unity etc)

6) A full-scene render is not required (but cool space scenes earn bonus points). But sorry guys. Show your wires. Wireframe or raw sculpt clay will be required to win. I am jugging on modeling not rendering skills.

Modeling Time: Really does not apply. Just get modeling or dusting!

My main criterion will be sci-fi geek cred. Earn those pocket protectors!

Challenge Ends: ~Noon Pacific - November 30, 2017

*Winning entry announced: ~Noon Pacific - Dec 1 (so check back)

Challenge #289 will start now!

This is an old project a did a few years ago for a indie movie wich was sadly put on hold.
This is in no way a high rez object, but it should be renderable
on a low config system. (So no extensive edge beveling/detailing)
Modeling wise it's not that complicated, and a lot of the time
went in the actual design and texturing process.

It required a shuttle with the following specs:
-Small worn shuttle
-an (old style) Galactica like design reference
-Hexagonal cross section
-no windows

Some designs specs I've added during concept phase:
-Color scheme wich bears a resemblance to the space shuttle
-Moskito like silhouette when standing
-Insets wich looks windowish as an orientation point for a viewer
- workhorse design, no design beauty

I know the writing / texturing is mirrored but this would have been fixed as soon as it would get the final go.

Modeling time: A few weekends can't say the exact time
3rd party plugs: My CopyUV plugin was actually developed
during this project for a quick texturing workflow
This was a LW only (with photoshop) project. 90% of the textures are uvmapped

BTW I also modeled a movie reference into it :)

Well, here's several Culture spaceships:
(Iain M Banks Culture series)

Plate GSV class - x1
Ocean GSV class - x1
Desert MSV class - x2
Abominator GOU class - x2
Murderer GOU class - several
Torturer ROU class - several
Killer ROU class - several
Gangster ROU class - several
GCU class - lots
LCU class - lots
...and various others.

Made on home computer - no professional stuff.
Software: LW 11
Polygon count: 30m+
Time: years (albeit on hobby schedule)

I'm working on a more detailed version, but it will take my poor Devil's Canyon a while to render it all.

Hi:

This is my first time modelling a spaceship.
I watched Ron Thornton's spacecraft model design video, and try to create a different spaceship.
It took about 1 or 2 hours. I hope you like it !!!

Sweet! That looks so cool. I was thinking the articulated pods - which appear to double up as landing gear - might be vulnerable to FOD (Foreign Object Damage), being so close to the ground? ... :-)

Yeah also had similar thoughts when I modeling it :)

Nice, would look very at home in the Firefly universe too.

Hi there, almost missed the show !
I'm deeply sorry I really don't have time to create a spaceship from scratch, spending all my spare time to my Haut-Koenigsbourg castle model, but since that when I don't model castles, I model almost exclusively spaceships, I thought I could post renders of this one, according to rule 2.
100% modeled and rendered in Lightwave. Most textures were made in substance designer. I think the funniest render was the blueprint one I made for sci-fi blueprint FB group.
This one is supposed to be the "Faith Bringer" deep space explorer. I made it to illustrate a short story I wrote a few years ago. I even did a video teaser of the short story with it (but it's awful, especially for the characters, so I won't show this here :) )
Hope it's OK to post here and it doesn't spam the challenge.

Edit : sorry forgot the 3rd party plug-ins. LWCAD, extensively, a bit of Quad Panels, some IFW2 if I recall correctly, and most certainly some DPont plug-ins, but is there someone who doesn't use DPont plugins at all in Lightwave ? :)

MY take on a tanker. 100% created in Lightwave and textured with what ever I had on my hard drive. It's an older model I didn't have a chance to finish.

I loved every entry, bar none, but in the end the Firefly-ish vibe won me over. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

Congrats, and good luck with your next challenge! :jam:

Congratulation to tischbein3,

And my appologies to our beloved spinland, he has my sincere respect.

Sorry spinland for not contributing, i am suffering a lot from technical problems and due to busy time schedule it is impossible to spend time on this very useful competition.

I promise to be back ASAP.
