View Full Version : Rendering anim in octane for lw or modo?

Do you have any experience with octane in lightwave and modo?
Atm I'm deciding between octane for lw or modo. Which is the better intergrated and easiest to use for production?

I'm interested in rendering static geo and instances; also character anims from max (possibly Maya) via alembic/mdd/pc2,

Has anyone found that to be a successful approach and if so, are there any issues? Which is preferable as a data transfer format?

One concern I have is character model updates and passing back changes to lw/modo with altered point order.
Another is changes in material assignments and if that messes anything up.

Thanks

I think that for today the lw plugin is slightly better than the modo connector. On the other hand, although I do not really understand Modo very much, Modo can work better with alembic files. For example, I can not import Alelembic files from RealFlow - lw refuses to open them.

i'd think LightWave is the way to go, and perhaps add the plugin Advanced Placement.

however Modo wouldn't be a choice in general, so... well... up 2 u...      :)

Have you had any experience with mdd or point cache?

MDD should work fine in LW,

also check the Octane forums,

Octane MDD might be slow in Modo,

I have the demo installed in Modo and its great and super fast. Will probably be buying it after the new year. I dont think buying it for Modo or LW is a bad choice. Just depends on which app you use more. Modo also has support for vray and they are going to have a beta of AMD's proRender sometime this year for Modo 11 owners.

Hands down LW has the best octane integration, followed by c4d. The modo version was quiet rough when it came out with lots of people complaining about feature support and things like the IPR not being as responsive as other implementations.
So I believe LW wins here.

If you have the choice and a good GPU rig, I would recommend having a look at RedShift. From what I've seen it's way faster then Octane and the integration os very well done (at least in C4D, don't know about modo)

Looking at the website, I see Maya, SI, Max, C4D and Houdini so I don't think either LW or Modo is supported. Looks like they're working on Katana, another Foundry product. Close but no cigar.

Softimage is also supported ;)

I've been playing with the Unity integration of Octane. It's not there yet, but it mostly works. =)

yeah, I was considering this rig:

the bare frame one.

Similar type of thing shown here with LW by LWguru (impressed with his work in LW, I hope he is on the beta of Next)

On a side note, has anyone got the file (CAR_BULLET_PHYSICS.zip) linked here?

I'd like to check out his car setup. Link is dead.

that's why I wrote SI.

Now that's a proper gpu machine!

You and me both - that rig looks amazing!
