Would be nice to get dev like this

Well there is a DP edge node for that, have you tried?

We've had this functionality since LW 7 with the TB_ Edge plugin and now we have dp_edge in dpkit.

TB Edge is only 32 bit from what I Remember.

There's a rounded edge shader in Modo and its really quite good as you can bake them to a normal map. Its just a part of the material property.

Can't you bake all normals in LW too? Dp- edge should be possible to bake.

I dont think you can bake the edge shader in LW. If you can that would be the first ive heard of it.

Yes, you can. I would say that you could bake any normal in LW if its edge, procedural or mesh. Thanks to dpkit, I should add.

last time I tried it it was rubbish, it has no fine control, to get a good balance between sharp 90 edges and large softer curves was impossible and to make matters worse it looks blocky as though it is using a very low bit depth

Thats what ive heard Gerry.

Ztreem i would like to see an example of using dp kit to add a rounded edge, then baking that to a low resolution mesh.

I made a video for Pixel Fondue on exploding a mesh for normal map baking using the rounded edge shader.

@hr - Oh, yah I do that workflow in lw as is now.

What I was actually meaning here wasn't the edge shader. It was the development feedback loop.

hrgiger

Ah yeah well that wont happen with LW unfortunately.

Ok, didn't really have time for this, but I put together something really fast.

update: Ztreem provided a nice example.

Well that's good that it allows for that. Something like that should be native but at least there's an option.

I wish modo and lightwave had native GPU renderers now.

Have you tried out octane? I'm considering it ATM and wonder how well it's intergrated wirh both. Which one is better for production.

I have octane 2. Not upgrading to 3.
I want redshift for llghtwave.

gar26lw

so why aren't you upgrading to 3?

second question, would you consider vray for modo?

GPU render for lightwave exists ... and it is OCTANE :)

just pull the plug .. use it with a decent .. even old mid range card .. such as 780 GTX .. and re-assign your F9 for Octane ...

It is a crime if you render something and still not using Octane :)

Octane is best at exterior shots it seems, for interiors the rendertimes can be long.  (yes?)

tyrot

erikal you have octane license yes ?

erikals
09-28-2017, 03:12 PM
yes i do, however way too little time on my hands these days to test it thoroughly.

many nice tests on LightWiki though, and perhaps at the Octane forum too (?)

running 11.6 over here, so missing out on FiberFX in Octane and VDB Smoke.

skipping 2015, not sure if i will upgrade to LightWave Next... we'll see...

But, erikals, who's going to test every plugin and tool available and make nice videos for reference on youtube, then?

Don't be like that! :)

I wish modo and lightwave had native GPU renderers now.

Cycles and ProRender are both potential candidates, saving Newtek the bother to develop a complete new GPU renderer. Maxon decided to go with ProRender, although in its current (beta) state it's still not production ready. And very slow compared to the Blender version (of which the new version is coming out next month!). But it is where things are going now.

erikals

from a workflow point of view, i'd like to stick with LightWave for now, so Octane is a supernice option in that regard.

Allabulle, take a look here >

nice intro's :)

GPU is nice.. but when a scene is large and complicated.. I've found more often than not that the CPU rendering handles it better.

erikals

i've been wondering a bit about this too...

allabulle

erikals, I'm an Octane user for quite some time now. Thanks for the links, though.

If you won't be upgrading to the eventual LightWave Next, I wonder if you'll keep doing all those videos about almost everything LightWave as you do now. Your youtube channel is appreciated and will be missed. That was it. :)

erikals

even if skipping LightWave Next, there are still a Gazillion things that can be tested in LW11   :)

plugins, Octane materials, dynamics, CA, mocap   (etcetera)
