Looking for a easier way to UV Map objects built in Lightwave. I'm looking at Unfold 3D to unwrap an object and layout the UVMaps, then pass the object to Substance for texturing (don't have Substance yet, it's on the to get list at the same time), before returning the model back to Lightwave for rendering.

Does anyone use Unfold 3D? What do you like or hate about it?
Is there better way to UV Map?
Thanks

I would test run 3D coat first. If that suits you, you get sculpting, retopo, UV mapping tools and texturing tools similar to substance in one app. It's free to test.

I know it's more moolah, but 3D Coat is simply beautiful for unwrapping, and tweaking the unwraps if you need to. Plus everything else Ztreem mentioned. It's beautiful. Quirky workflow, but beautiful

What is wrong with ABF UV Unwrap.. ?

Do you want to UV map organic objects, or archiviz (without distortions).. ?

To start with its archivist, man made, home made plant. But I also want to move into sculpting creatures next year at some point.

I like the layout of Unfold 3D, it's easy to understand. I've only just installed a trial version of 3DCoat. Doesn't recognize my graphics tablet, sculpting with a mouse is not fun. I'm still open minded. Do I look at ZBrush in more detail.

I'm also looking into designing mini articulated action figures, next year for 3D printing. So a lot to think about.

I'm going to get more involved in the trial version to know what you mean by quirky. Thanks for the help.

Which graphics tablet are you using? It recognises my ancient Wacom Sapphire which I was thinking of updating. Curious as I wouldn't want to invest in a tablet that wasn't supported, although the impression I get from 3D Coat devs is that they're very proactive.

Quirky mainly due to the various rooms you can do things in. Reminds me a bit of the old Imagine program. My first attempt at modelling in LW, UVing and texturing with 3D Coat, then rendering with LW http://albino-igil.com/blog/?p=2482

I have a Hunion tablet which I use with Affinity Paint and Designer. The spec requirements for 3D coat or ZBrush did state something about how a tablet should work, which I didn't know anything about at the time. My tablet works fine with any 2D app.

I preferred 3D Coat over ZBrush. Now I have to think about Marmoset toolbox too. Looks like LWNext will have be alembic link to Marmoset.

Wow! The frayed leather strap on those binocs looks amazing. How did you do the edges, fibers, or just good maps?

Probably some config setting in your tablets utility to add 3DC to it's known programs. You definitely wand to use a tablet with 3DC.

I've been away from it for awhile, but doing the UV work in 3DC helps you understand what it is in LW that you're needing to do, but didn't know how to with it's limited, or at least ill-explained toolset. You'll have a lot of, "so THAT'S how it's supposed to work" moments.

If nothing else, watch the UV specific vids on YouTube; the 3DCoat channels ones are good but check out AlienMinefield's as well.

SO much this. I actually jumped in when Pilgway did a Christmas sale (I think it was 50% off), so there's that to consider if you want/are able to wait a few months to see if they do again.
