View Full Version : Revisiting hypervoxels planet clouds..single voxels.

sorry, I am a cloud and hypervoxel addict, and due to abstinence and no new lightwave version and no new volumetrics, I got a sudden itch again to fiddle with some old stuff.
I had some thread some years ago with similar stuff, thought I should revisit it now when I got a new machine running, mind you..I still havenīt installed the goodie procedurals from dpont ..where you have some nice cloud procedurals, samples below just plain fbm procedurals, second sample just a distortion with turbulence noise.

the trick is to use the gain function and the wrap node, and set the proper values in the gain function in balance with hypertexture strength, thickness and for clearly defined shadows, I increased the value very high.

one single null, coloring is done outside of the nodes in the standard panel with a gradient set to previous layer going from blue to white.
to avoid having flat cloud tops, you may want to set contrast of the procedural to negative values.

Not full realism, but itīs a start, though one may be better of using plain images and shading tricks, but this is fun.

some more, and more tricks is to increase the density of the voxel quite a bit, maybe 400-500 procent to avoid getting to bulgy peaking clouds and get a more flattened cloud layer overall.

so many options to tweak endlessly it seems, this time one of the samples is also the weather procedural, also distorted by a turbulence noise....

I use a single HV for solar coronas. Works pretty well.

yep..I used to do that too ages ago, even in sprite mode....( edit..maybe I misunderstood, corona might look different than typical solar flare and not the same thing ? showcase please )

simbiont shader for the sun but still hv flares...

That was ages ago, back to present time and space :)

closer to the planet, though at this stage closer to the cam, textured shadows becomes extremly slow, so here i turned that off, thus lacking full cloud shadow casting on to itself, no surface land area, no land no country..no wars :)

These are way cool. Love HV's for space stuff. Love to see some handholding tutorials. I really got to play with nodes more. Thanks.

Yep they are, and easy to start adding moons and planets, though this one with clouds is a bit more tricky to work with, hereīs another iteration just fast whip with some hv surface moon, so those are not volumetric.
as for the planet with atmosphere, you could add a true geometry with water surface in the same position as the hv planet clouds, then tweak it right in surface settings and scaling.
for these moons I also changed to use ambient lighting to accenuate the planet shape abit instead of going all dark where the sun isnīt lighting it up, realisticly almost complete darkness is what there should be, but it isnīt as attractive
when doing stylished space shot.

I tend to just throw some ordinary voxels in for fun, meaning that original size is quite small, though you can rescale them and the textures will not really change, so that is a good thing, or rescale your mesh models to fit that tiny space scene :9

That Orange thing Prom, I hope that stops before it hits us.?

Wait phone Luc Besson, he's got an app for that! Well done.

Thanks...it can look better with som more effort, though mixing in real cloud maps on it I do not think will work properly, not after initial test, this tech isnīt ideal either, it would require setting land surfaces up in some way, as well as getting actual atmosphere, since here it is only clouds and a cut off where something that looks like water is..but itīs not really properly done, and the atmosphere would need a proper spectral attenuation to color the clouds more realisticly, may actually be more realistic to use terragen or the likes.

Excellent work, congratulations!!! ;)
Glad you liked it..Thanks MAUROCOR.

Oh..itīs been a cold summer here, one of the coldest for many years, so maybe a little heat :)..just a little of the top of the flames, then again we got the heat wave in middle europe now, it may reach us this week, but the heat will decline until then.

so what is that app Luc Besson has, I have no idea?

The Fifth Element Prom was the app (Leeloo) working with the other four, fire ,earth ,wind & water.

I was riffing bout Besson's movie 5th eiement that stops the big orange fireball planetoid

colliding with earth in the storyline.

If you like his work read my review on Valerian..

Thanks, if I ever had the time...would like to record a bit on a vid, but will probably not find time until the weekend.

Yes..the fifth element I have seen ..and I liked that one, as I like Leon, le grande blue, nikita..so Luc stuff is usually good stuff.
Canīt recall/understand the app connection though, may have to watch it again:)
