I am considering pulling the trigger on a Lightwave 2015 purchase.

I worked in the games industry years ago, contributing 3d work as a generalist to large-scale (hey, back then) turn-based 2D sprite-based CRPG's, each with a large number of pre-rendered characters and environments. We used Lightwave, eventually migrating to 3dsmax, etc. I left the industry a while back and though I now work under a completely different profession, I'd like to create a similar 2D CRPG game as a personal project. Times (and tools) have come a long way since then.

I'd like to come back to Lightwave for this project, but I'd like to hear from current devs/users how Lightwave 2015 handles development nowadays.

Lightwave has to be able to handle:
-Large, high-resolution pre-rendered environment backdrops composed of millions of polygons and hundreds of lights
-A lot of characters and character animations. A single set of keyframe animations would number over 100 per character. Sharing animations between bipedal characters is essential
-Lightwave had a great renderer back in the day, I am assuming that is still the case?

It would be ncie to have some decent plugins for:
-Foliage - I am looking for something different here, not SpeedTree, Onyx or XFrog
-Fluid dynamics for smoke/fire - I'm not expecting Fume FX-quality
-Decent particle dynamics for water -I'm not expecting RealFlow

I understand that now Blender can handle much of this and is very LW-friendly - Opinions on portability between the two are also welcome.

For LightWave game developers I made plugin
Batch Baking Camera http://batchbakingcamera.trueart.eu
which allows to bake surfaces and other procedural textures to image maps.

Also TrueArt's Global Materials
http://globalmaterials.trueart.eu
you should find useful while baking image maps f.e. occlusion map.

Thanks for the head's up on the plugins. I watched the video on the camera baker plugin. Pretty cool stuff.
