View Full Version : UV Mapping question... Project UV's from a view?

Hello LW'ers,
I have searched high & low for how to do this. I am trying to project UV's
onto a model from a camera perspective. Cannot figure out how to do it.
For a quick work around I opened my model in Blender to get it done.
But there must be a way to do this in LW as Blender drives me nuts.

I know exactly where the "camera/view" needs to project from. Just
not sure how to pull it off.

Watched a dozen tutorials & poured thru the forums looking for the answer.

any suggestions?

Thanks,
nbdy

i don't know if there is such a thing in LW What I do when faced with such a task is to make a morph, rotate the object so it faces a coordinate make the UV, then delete the morph.

Use freebe BMG Fusion.... its the bee's knee's at doing that>

using fusion to do UVs? Never knew it could.

you don't have to uv, just use "front" in the texture projection. as far as I know the image freezes at the point you activate it, to re project the image just drop down the selector to front again and it resets to the new cam position

I had done something for lw 9.6, I just recompiled it for lw 2015
this thing is highly experimental, and certainly a crashfest
projects uv from current view (so camera if you are in camera, light if you are in light, perspective when you are in perspective view etc)

as said it was highly experimental when I created it, and since I didn't
updated a single line of code, it might be an unprooved crashfest
(for example make sure you only select one object)

you will find it under modeler tools as
tibe3_MakeUVFromView

like the blender version, you need enough geometry so it will compensate
for perspective distortions

don't forget to save your object once the plugin has done its job ;)

as a comepnsation wish me luck for tomorrow :)

and yes, no subdivision surface objects for now.. sorry when there is interest I'll add a version (although I'm not sure
if the results would be accepteable)

also using objects with multible layers might be a problem

Well that's cool. Of course I have no idea how to use that program. Fired it up and stared at it a bit overwhelmed for a moment. Hopefully have time to
wrap my head around it.
Thanks

Is it PC only or will the PlugIn work with Mac. I have both but sitting in front of my MacBook at the moment.

Select the object you want to uv
Select the view you want to project (eg Cmara view) use a single view in layout
launch the plugin
a new uvmap called viewport is generated

sorry its pc only

I modeled the object in LW and really dont need to texture it. The object is being output to another program that needs a UV'd OBJ file.
Thanks.

Sure, this thing does not assign textures, it just creates the uv map in layout.

I really hope that if the new lw version does introduce camera view in modeler, I can get rid of some of the
memory allocations I used to get this thing do its job, wich would make the plugin much more stable, and
would eliminate some of the restrictions I currently have

Look up Texture Guide in the help pdf. It isn't literally projecting from the perspective camera, but does let you do projections off-axis.

This does give a little flavour of the powerful

manipulation of texture images in Fusion

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fusion%27s+front+projection+c amera

Six tuts there on that link.

I wish LW NeXT2 gets such manipulation in updates ?

ian, interesting vids might be handy in future

I quickly slapped together a small vid demonstrating the tibe3_MakeUVFromView
in action. As you can see, due to lack of geometry horizontal wise there is some perspective shift. These can only
be corrected by higher geometry. (More points so he can interpolate better)
as you know this also happens with the blender version.

Ok, seems there is a bug, I've just checked it and it seems I don't have to care about
some things I had to do previously. This should provide better results

Sorry but as said I just recompiled it and they heavily modified the viewport code since
9.6 (especially the undocumented stuff in modeler ;) )

edit: forget it, have to do the long road stay tuned.

Mhmm, the idea about releasing experimental plugins is to get help from people
using it.....so I can perfect it.

In this case fix that projection problem.

mhmmm

ok here it is "final final last one this one function" version wich should now
project correctly in camera view (video also updated)

@tischbein3
sorry it has taken me a few days to get back to this. I am not seeing the plugin. Perhaps I have installed it in the wrong directory.
It does not show up in Modeler Tools or anywhere else for that matter.

Thanks

You will have to add it manually
After you add the plugin,in the main menue choose:

Edit(1)->Edit Menu Layout (2)
Enter "tibe" in the search field (3)
Drag the plugin into the modeler tools(4)

oops, totally forgot about adding to my menus.
I did a test with it and it worked great. Thanks.

I would like to take the opportunity to say thanks for your work on plugins, I really like your design of your site, and some plugins...do you have a contribute/donate button somewhere?

Mhmm I'm thinking of completely revamping the site if I find the time :)
(for higher resolution, more graphic oriented)

well as for contributing back you could look at this one:

http://www.splotchdog.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=75:

still need some contributors so I can finance the second batch (currently its 50% complete)

Sure in lw and blender its not very intuitive to use them for lighting (in lw: either map it to the background by using
the textured environment plugin or render out a 360 panorama with only all the light objects in position, so you can use the
Important Sampled BG option)

but i think this is far better than just asking for donation :)

thanks for the kind words

Yes..thatīs one way to go..but I am not even sure I would need that currently..so it doesnīt make sense buying something that I do not need, I rather pay for what for some plugins I find useful.
Will see..:)
Keep up the good job.
