View Full Version : Opening a *.dae in LightWave is just blank

The title pretty much says it all. I'm trying to open a Sketchup 2016 *.dae file into LightWave 2015.3. It shows that it is open, but there is nothing to see.

I needed to import a sketchup file a couple of weeks ago. I used a free sketchup plugin for blender and exported it as a obj from blender to use in LW.
Lw's collada support is quite weak, blender has much stronger collada support.
Try opening the dae file in blender and export it as lwo, obj, fbx or ply to use in LW

From sketchup some .dae files show up, some do not.

Can you export out of Sketch up as an obj? That format always works well for me.

Afaik.. dae with Sketchup is a bit shaky in general. Try using FBX.

There is the old trick of exporting from Sketchup as .KMZ
Then rename the .KMZ file as .zip, unzip the file and the .dae and textures are there.

Might help...?

Sketch Up is a Bad Motor-Scooter! It's Meshes are awful!

Their DAE is a joke, it's not completely really a LW collada problem bash LW3DG thing

People on this forum have tried recently(in 2016) to make a complete SketchUp to LW

plug-in ended up throwing in the towel. The blender route seems good!

I updated to Sketchup 2017. This version has an OBJ exporter. I was able to bring a model into LW 2015.3, but not without gaining a bunch of artifacts and losing quite a few polygons.
