Im trying to export a physics sim to be used in Max but theres no animation in the file when opened in either max of modo for that matter - is there some technical limitation of physics animations?

Can Max load MDD? ( from LW )

Some FBX implementations do not support vertex animation, they require at least one bone in the file, not sure if that could be the problem.

I was just suggesting using MDD instead of FBX and possibly exporting out an OBJ to import in to Max.
( come to think of it doesn't Max load .lwo? Probably not. I'm probably thinking it can write .lwo from Max )

when I import the fbx back into LW there's no animation either - will try the bone suggestion

I 've exported bullet sims from Lw to unity as fbx sucessfully. Be sure to not use parts object when you want to export as fbx.
Separate objects can be exported as fbx. Parts objects need to be exported as mdd or alembic.
