I'm curious how someone would go about getting rid of all the stuff that you don't need if you just wanted to use this for the land formation and not trees and small rocks etc. I suppose there should be an easy way to retopo on top of this obj model. Is this what others are thinking?

In a more sophisticated software you can remove them by using various filters. I personally prefer to do the cleanup in the pointcloud, and not in the 3D mesh. So some cleanup tools would be appreciated.

Below is one of my Lidar/Lightwave projects.

Lightwave illustrations on page 11, and I did the CAD modeling on page 14.

Well, f.e. cleaning up LIDAR images is one of the many reasons you might use: http://www.russian3dscanner.com/ (Wrap3/Wrap3X).
