This deserves it's own thread. Lino's Mazinger Z animation, and brief behind the scenes montage.

Yeah, I like the smoke and explosion. I could do with a tutorial on how it was made.

I love this. Checked out the original series on youtube and there is a woman in it who shoot rockets from her boobs! How cool is that.

Love both the tribute animation as well as the behind the scenes.

I've been working on a story for a web series, and I'm thinking that maybe LW Next might be the package to use for it. Luckily, I'm still deep in pre-production while finishing up some other animated goodies.

Looking forward to what comes from LW Next!

I am not a real big fan of this style. Though I love the camera angles they use. And Lino - or whoever- nailed it.

A few cool LW Next features in there. Looks like they are using open vdb for those explosions. Yes?

I suspect those are just cel-shaded agglomerations of hypervoxels. While it's possible they've also added cel-shading support to OpenVDB imports, the OpenVDB GUI shown just a few months ago limited surfacing of imports to realistic, PBR-type shading. If they intended to support "open" surfacing of OpenVDB imports all along, it'd be a bit odd and wasteful for them to first build their own custom PBR-/realism-oriented OpenVDB surfacing GUI and then throw it away for a generic surfacing GUI.

In any case, I'm not really sure you need anything as workflow-elaborate as OpenVDB-exported particle simulations to make what was shown. HV's attached to geometry appear more than adequate to handle what was shown, so KISS applies. Much easier/more efficient to back-and-forth with HV settings and geometry deformation than back-and-forth with an OpenVDB particle sim source app. Cel shading primarily relies on surface/edge detail, after all.

Coming April 13/14 will be the end of "month two" of Lino's "three month max, but maybe one or two" prediction from FB.

They did a nice job with cel shading, wonder how good the PBR surfacing interface and viewport representation are in comparison?

He says in the comments it's displaced geometry.

Did he really say that? LW Group has been so conscientious about being non-committal that "max" surprises me.

Paraphrased for brevity, but semantically and syntactically equivalent.

The precise quote: "My best guess is LightWave Next should be out within 3 months from now. And that means it could be 1 or 2 months from now as well."

So we're near. Already ready to plunk down $250 for some cel shading goodness.

I once said to my wife "three months max" when she asked when I'll finish work I started in our garden....been three years since then.

No offence guys but when it comes to another bloke ability to define a timeframe I'm just not buying a single word lol.

Especially from a bloke that only respond to negativity with vague claims and is not interested in having 'normal' conversation with the users kf their software.

I highly doubt it will be out on 13/14th

Today, April Fool's Day, would be an appropriate day for release. So do we know for sure it will be $250(ish) for upgrade, when the day does come?

I tell you guys a a moderately cheerful story/ish something. My coworkers and me had conversations about softwares in general. The max users were deeply disappointed with max though they agreed the uv tools are great. The other felt sorrow for XSI and he learns now Houdini. The youngest guys hates max and learns Houdini and uses C4d. I am the LW guys and these guys are all amazed when they see VPR in action. And they also admired the cool and clean design of LW. So maybe is not that bad at all. Cheers pals and nice spring to everyone on the northern hemisphere :)

It's definitely $250 for upgrade if you have the latest version, go to your account page, Next is in there and available to purchase and download.

"They" say a lot of things, don't they?

$250 is the price for people who went for a promotion for Core subscribers to upgrade to LW 2015. The upgrade price for LW 2015 and subsequent upgrades was dropped to $250. If you upgraded before the promotion, your upgrade price remained at $295. If you weren't a Core subscriber you paid $695 for upgrades.

Now, this was written early on a Sunday morning before coffee, but I THINK there's a fact or two in there somewhere . . .

The new renderer and Unified Mesh System is a big sell for me, beside modifier stack. After this release, will NT go full throttle with UI overhaul? I also think there should be some OpenGL improvements, like implementing 'soft selection' overlays on the mesh when using falloffs.

I bought a Core membership. I upgraded to version 11, but didn't get LW 2015. When I click on the option to upgrade to 2015, the price is $395. So even the discount from Core membership expires?

wyattharris

Could be. I definitely got the Core price when I upgraded but that was not long after it was announced.
But what do I know, call customer support. They are usually pretty quick.

Yes- if you don't stay current. There were two levels of Core memberships - $295 early adopters and $395 procrastinators. You are on the $395 plan. If you upgrade to 2015 for $395 you'll be entitled to LW Next for $295 because the early bird special is going away (we get other stuff - but not a price break). You'll save $105 by upgrading to 2015 now and then get LW Next for $295.
