I have no clue how amenable viewport OpenGL assembly mechanism would be to this, but having ability to control OpenGL display attributes at an object- and/or surface-level of the current global OpenGL prefs (see image, add Bump/Normal for GLSL case) would be useful for tuning viewport perf in complex/heavy scenes.
