anyone know what they are using to make this movie?

also - This is the star wars movie you've been looking for!!

amazing!! Exciting!! Non-stop ride.

Plus BEST space battle yet. Not a senseless battle either - it had a real sense of purpose this time.

star destroyers had uber amounts of detail too..
and a new ship class

the hammerhead!! a pretty unique and fun space ship with a specific purpose.

if you have not seen it - make sure to see it in imax
the space battles get a boost from such a wide screen!!

best movie of 2016 for me!! (then godzilla resurgance!!)

I would actually recommend to see it not only in 3D but 4DX which enhances the 3D; I actually felt quite tired after the movie - you just knew with every laser bolt, punch/karate kick you were going to get a jolt! Even with the ships passing by the seats shook. Totally awesome! As for the ship/battle sequences, they were fantastic with the moving seats.

Totally agree with you re: how good this movie is, for me the best SW since Empire Strikes Back. The producers of this film obviously took their time and really asked themselves "How can we make this the best it can be and fit it seamlessly in with the SW universe?"

No idea the VFX pipeline although I did read an interesting article about the complexities of a couple of the CG characters - can't say anymore for fear of spoilers!

Combination of Wings3D and Blender for modeling, cycles was the renderer of choice and Daz 3D for all character animation. Sadly no LightWave. The Blender-Wings-Daz pipeline was so successful that it is being adopted by many of the facilities for all future productions.

Why did Leia smile in the end when many people just died. That's just wrong.

For me this movie is in the 1st 3 of Star Wars movies of all times. This, 4 and 5. The prequels should be erased from history and Force Awakens was a disappointment. 6 is ok.

In both Rogue One and The Force Awakens, I would have much preferred less sunny daylight environments -- darker/grittier and way more moody lighting. And wtf with palm trees etc in Rogue One.. on an alien planet?... Alien worlds should be a little more like in Avatar, in that they take you to another place. If I want to see palm trees on a sunny beach, I will make another trip to St. Barts. I did, however, love both films. RO a little more.

Interesting Norka,
ILM huge CPU GPU Power they gotta use it somehow, so why not crunch up big datasets in G.I.

But seriously now, I hear that the White Troopers are in the next Carib Holiday advert on Telly.

You got a valid point, they could have had tasteful purple sand with today's colouring tools available.

( I'm a waiting Guardians of the Galaxy Rev2 ' cos it ain't pompous & a laugh done well.)

Gareth Edwards comes from an independent FX background and is used to doing things himself for his previous films, so after much testing he insisted on the Blender-Wings-Daz (or as it it now being called BWD) pipeline on Rogue.

The usual I'd guess.. 3DSMax, Softimage, Maya (often on Linux interestingly enough), Motionbuilder, Flame, Nuke, Katana, Ncloth, Qualoth. As for plugins I would be very surprised if Thinking Particles isn't on the list. I even heard rumors about UE4 being used at ILM... but that is just a rumor. I do know they use Clarisse these days. They used to used to use Houdini at ILM, but I don't know how it is today. Oh yeah.. and Zbrush of course.

Rogue One was mostly rendered with Renderman, using the new RIS technology. Houdini's mantra was used for some bits done in Houdini.

John Knoll used modo in rogue1 probably for previz

nice, will be fun to see how LightWave 2017 will compete when it comes to poly-crunching.

maybe people will look into LightWave again for previz.

previz for Avatar started about 10 years ago i believe.

I'd be happier if they also used LW for actual shots.. not only previz. Also, I think UE4 is a much better candidate for previz these days.

and if I am not mistaken they also used Lightwave for the asset creation as they used many of the ones from the previz, (although I think your supposed to call it VAD (virtual art department) as its closer to the final than a previz, its more of a like for like :) ) I think ILM still use lightwave also In a very small capacity but also for asset creation, along with Modo and as they have adopted Clarisse as one of their main renderers I am guessing that maybe more so now as Clarisses default import file format is LWO.

gerry_g

Modo is is way more nimble in terms of moving big scenes around in viewport and then converting the current POV into camera position, this makes setup for an animatic a breeze, would love to see the same in LW

well in the next version we will be getting layout view to modeller so that will make things easier to edit and create models based on background plates, even though it will be two apps still it looks like the integration will be a bit more stable and real time looking at the early video (well over a year ago)

The Hammerhead corvette is actually from the expanded universe as you see it in use in the "Empire at War" series of Star Wars games. They are cute and sometimes annoying as an opposing player (or computer opponent) can use them to ram your ships causing damage and depending on size of rammed target; destroyed.

So, for those of us that knew this obscure vessel, when the general asks for one to be brought up, it was an even more exciting little treat! Although I have to admit that the Star Destroyer hitting the other looked like it was made from egg shells. The idea was cool, but over the top in my opinion. Star Destroyers are a bit tougher than that.....

As far as Godzilla Resurgence goes, my brother surprised me by taking me to a screening here (limited screening here in the States on that one). I am a huge Godzilla Fan. My brother and I both enjoyed that movie very much; both at the intended and uninteded comical situations. That and also the fact that Godzilla kicks ***. :-)

100 yen to play dreamcatcher machine, 1 try. I tried 3 times to make it fall down.
The prizes are usually rare and not sold in stores so its a collectible item.
Akihabara has tons of game centers with these rare collectibles.

that was a good article that sums up some of the stuff i've heard in anime -

I've seen maid cafe in some anime.. so it's funny to hear the real skinny on it, not at all how it's portrayed in the anime!!

Have you seen the life sized gundam's yet? Love it - so different!
