We are converting the serial output of a Daktronics All Sport CG to USB in order to interface with LiveText. Does anyone have experience using a USB extender (extends USB via ethernet) in that configuration?

Thanks!

How far do you have to go? RS-232 serial should extend up to 50ft (with just a cable) and would be much cheaper than getting a USB extension system.

Roughly 500 feet, unfortunately.

It would be better to increase the distance between the All-Sport 5000 and the CG, rather than the distance between the CG and the LiveText. You can use a XLR or 1/4" cable to go 500 with the J output from the back of the AS 5000.

Graphics Outfitter's 'Short Haul Modem' could be a solution as well, it supports up to 1000ft for RS-232 extensions.

I can report the USB extenders were successful on a run of 450+ feet (using two sets). Of course, sending the CG feed via the 1/4" connector (and XLR) might be a more logical solution, since it could run through our existing cable snakes. But this allows us to keep the CG unit courtside. Thanks for your input!
