Sorry I just cannot get this to work and I don't know what I am doing wrong. I am just frustrated and never thought it would be this difficult. I guess I am just thick headed.

Share your scene and one of us will set this up for you. Best way of learning is to deconstruct a working file I find especially when it comes to rigging.

Right... so just have the piston, which can be FK controlled (if thats all you're needing) moving back n forth... then over the top, string a simple 2 piece IK, with the root attached to one side, and the goal at the other.

I made a simple animation with some other parts that I ripped apart from another test and this works I guess, because it is setup down the z axis. I could not get the other to work down the x.
But, if anybody wants to look here it is.
