View Full Version : Minimizing Risks- Network Drops and Recommendations?

Looking for some feedback or recommendations from folks on any experiences that might have had with similiar instances. As of late we've been getting some intermittent drops of NDI sources into our 460 Advanced. The present workflow is 2 channels of CG, 2 channels of replay - all over NDI into the TriCaster.

Everyone of our devices lives on the same switch, CAT6 cabling in place and have verified One GB connections between all devices. We've been working with our IT folks on campus to ensure that all of the devices are clear on the network, and for the most part this was our workflow in the past on the same network but with only 2 NET sources.

The concerning part is when pulling up the feeds on NDI Video Monitor on another device they are all stable and of good quality. It really seems that once they hit the TriCaster the issue arises, like it can't handle all the sources at once. Last evening we had to drop the 4 sources to two, and go low bandwidth on the other two so they would stay connected. The issue was most prevelant on the scorebar as the clock would stop. I would switch the source to black and then reconnect. This would address the issue for a short time until it arose again...

For those who have done anything similar to this. What would be some checklist type things to verify? Settings in windows, on the TriCaster specifically? Are there any tests that I can run within the Tricaster to see if it's being taxed to heavily. Anyone's thoughts and feedback is much appreciated!

Mostly likely this is a network issue outside the TriCaster.

Few things to try to see if they lead anywhere.

- Make sure your TriCaster is set to a 'Work' network type, not 'Public'

- Force the TriCaster Ethernet interface to only operate at 1GB network speed (not auto-detect). See if your switch allows you to force the network speed on a port and if so, set it to 1GB as well.

- Have you tried another Ethernet cable? I've seen cases where the cable is fine for normal everyday data where re-sending packets isn't a big deal, but NDI is a real-time protocol and while some re-sending of packets can be dealt with, if the cable is requiring many re-sends you will have problems. If you run a new cable, use CAT6 or CAT6a, while this cable type is designed for 10Gb Ethernet, it should easily handle 1Gb Ethernet bandwidth.
