I'm probably missing something obvious here, but not had this problem before. I was just experimenting with using strips for hair with a transparency channel, bump, spec, and colour. However the transparency is now cutting into the demo head sphere. (see image example) Anyone know why this is??

Up the ray recursion limit. If you want to avoid it completely use clipmaps instead of transpasrency, bu you lose semi-transparent pixels.

Thanks...just discovered using clip maps cured it. Will try upping the ray recursion limit.
