This was posted to the FCP.co forums today. I'm am just blown away that Motion could do this!

It's ok I guess but looks a little cheesy as far as lighting and animation. I don't think most paying clients would accept it for 3D work.

Well yeah it looks like an animation from the 90s, but it's Apple Motion which isn't a 3D software. And this guy ingeniously built all this using fonts.
This isn't using any plugins, just factory shipped Motion. I don't think AE can even do this without plugins like Element3D.

Well it is probably an ingenious way of using a program in a way it wasn't meant to be but what if you spent a lot of time doing something like that and the client wanted something else that couldn't be done in Motion? I say always use the right tool for the job instead of using something beyond its comfort zone.

That's certainly an achievement. Apple Motion must have some nice 3D text tools, you can extrude 3D shapes in After Effects and use ray tracing, but the render times are so slow that no one uses it.

Ha.. I don't think anyone would be bragging about their 3D Motion graphics from that one..

Wait, this is computer generated?!

I know...I know...it looks terrible when compared to LW or any other actual 3D software. All I'm saying is I'm surprised Motion could do this.

Most people probably know AE better...so imagine doing this in AE without any plugins.
Just for reference on how complicated this would be in AE: https://www.editingcorp.com/make-3d-objects-ae-without-plugins/

This video should be titled "The Uncanny Valley"

in AE now all objects can become extruded as soon as you enable the raytrace 3d button

as of about 2013...
