Hi Guys,

For me it's a bit of overkill to buy one program for one function only.

The dreaded .EPS creation.

Importing a .EPS file is an awesome way to shortcut modelling.

I have tried other .EPS creation programs, yet none work.

Have you found an alternative to Illustrator?

Also I absolutely hate the subscription model Adobe has in place.

Regards Charles

Affinity Designer (currently free beta on Windows and long ago present on MAC)

Creature House Expression 3.3 (http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/5/d/a5d625a5-2e3d-4e9c-8608-6de48d7b569f/CreatureHouseExpression3_3.exe)

This was purchased by Microsoft, destroyed as their own "Expression Design" product, and then discontinued. The original Creature House 3.3 version is still available as freeware (the latter Microsoft "Expression Design" is still available as freeware too (http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/6/8/C6866D29-E373-4F3F-98F0-E80903E77852/Design_Trial_en.exe) but it does not export EPS/AI).

Exporting AI from Expression 3.3 appears to work better than EPS in Lightwave.

The Windows version of Expression can run portably and also on Mac/Linux via Wine.

CorelDraw was always my favorite (not free, but cheaper than Illy). Xara Designer Pro (also not free, but cheaper -- notice a pattern?)

Oh cool, finally a Windows release (well, beta) really liked the look of the Mac version.

Not sure if you don't want any adobe product, but if you use photoshop you can export a spline shape out of photoshop to use.> Export illustrator eps. It works great!

I am a long time fan of Xara Designer Pro. I met my current creative mentor when I wrote a review of his book, which was the definitive text on the software, and we learned we live less than an hour from each other. It's Windows only but it is lightning fast, can do anything Illy can do (and IMNSDHO much better) and saves to .eps or .ai if needed. It also does animation and can even create interactive web pages (though not sound for SEO purposes) if you desire.

Hiya!

I prefer Serif DrawPlus. The latest version, 8, exports .eps. I haven't upgraded yet (still on 5), but if/when I get some extra cash to spend I may have to upgrade. I find Serif products to be right at the threshold of "High-Powered Professional"; meaning, affordable with a down-to-earth customer service and customer base, with just about every 'high-end' gee-whiz doo-dad in the product. In short, they are "professional level software" but without the "professional level condescension". ;) Unlike trying to deal with, say, Adobe or Autodesk...where if they don't recognize your name or your company, you get put down, told stupidly obvious things to do, and generally "put on hold", so to speak.

Another quick note on Xara Designer Pro: the creators are former Corellians who defected deciding they could do better. Also sound familiar? :D
