can I do without using uv maps or weight maps?
I want to do it by combination of function or math nodes or some other.

Very easily with IFW2:

I'll have a think about how to do it without, but if you do much texture work, I would recommend IFW2, it gives many more options for surfacing and is well worth the investment.

Here's a version using the free Renderman nodes from Dennis:

edit: Neither of the above are actually how I'd do it in production, but serve to illustrate the principles involved. I'm sure you could do it natively with lots and lots of maths nodes, but frankly, the time it would take to set up, even if you only pay yourself $10 an hour, would buy IFW2, probably twice over! :)

Check your "cells" settings. :)

Oh, and to avoid the colour problems, just plug into diameter:

Here's another with the IFW2 Dimples and Windows nodes, note, you need a Map node to shift the pattern centre and make it a cubic mapping:

Sorry, stopped for lunch between this post and the last. ;)
