It's getting pretty tough to stick around-- good thing the competition co$t$ an arm and a leg.

the thin film shader we have had in lightwave for a long long time
the shadow caster has been there too for a while in lightwave
voronoi fracture, well they have probably a better one and procedural, though it may show up for lightwave similar tools for that.

camera tracking the lw team needs to catch up on, and what I really would like to see, ambient occlusion in openGL..not just vpr with iteration.

Not directly dropping my jaw for the cinema release, good things..mut not anyone that you go ...wow, not for me anyway.

Non-destructive workflow prometheus, non-destructive workflow.

- Film shader: This is physically accurate, not a fake effect

- Shadow catcher: This was possible in C4D before but this integration creates automatic alpha channels for compositing etc.

- Voronoi fracture: This is a MoGraph tool and fully integrated into the workflow, not a plugin. Watch this:
https://youtu.be/OzNAhDTDffo

- This is not static / still image camera tracking, C4D had motion tracker before and this adds object tracking.

And yes, all non-destructive and uncluttered. All parameters animatable of course.

For me full Substance integration, the new mograph features, viewport enhancements and interactive knife tool are the biggest ones. But there are many more like OpenSubdiv, GPU based displacement, parenter improvements etc.

UV mapping and bodypaint improvements are announced as free updates in the R18 cycle.

This video (not from Maxon) shows the viewport enhancements nicely (starting at 0:25s):

I'm still learning Lightwave, though the one thing I look enviously at in 4D is the hair module which seems to mimic some useful styling controls. Out of curiosity, how good is tracking integrated into 4D ? Can a face be tracked by using a face mesh like these:-

SynthEyes video at 00:10 (https://vimeo.com/145325445)
PFTrack video at 04:16 (https://vimeo.com/57939161)

Many thanks for any insight.

Non-destructive workflow prometheus, non-destructive workflow.

That I have known for quite some time.

Slightly OT, but even Maya is getting in on the act, nice suite:

Thing is, LW can already do a lot of this but needs a sensibly thought out UI to offer it to users in a simple way, without poking around with hundreds of nodes!

Sorry haven't played with the motion / object tracker yet... Yes, hair is very convincing. And the best thing is that vray hair takes over the c4d hair tag / settings.

Wow have you seen this: VERSUS Maxon short was just released, beautiful animation with fur and hair!

I aggree, the only thing that looks odd in that sequence is quite possibly the dog, everything else is like "meat feast" pizza but for your eyes.

Absolutly true...every node added and more complex stuff to do, node network increases in amount and complexity and so does your thinking on how track it right, a way to compress nodes to modules for easier access and control per action rather than per function is a better way to increase creativity and the speed to do it.

Yeah, right around there things start to look a bit like taxidermy. Wierdly, the lizard looks most lifelike.

I have a sneaking suspicion the dog/fox shot was done FIRST, and the other more convincing shots were completed later, as the team got more experience.

I got a e-mail from Safe Harbor about if you buy R17 now you get R18 free when released so my curiosity got the best of me. Nothing like confusing a customer. :) http://www.sharbor.com/search/?fq%5Buseful_links%5D=On+Sale&fq%5Bmanufacturer%5D=Maxon&manu=1&trk_msg=UOQQGUDE0JRKJ4MUT2BHRHTE0K&trk_contact=GR5H8IUU1JF6B4FI34Q17GLP00&utm_source=Listrak&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=http%3a%2f%2fwww.sharbor.com%2fsearch%2f% 3ffq%255Buseful_links%255D%3dOn%2bSale%26fq%255Bma nufacturer%255D%3dMaxon%26manu%3d1&utm_campaign=Maxon+Cinema+4D+R18+Promo
I'm glad LW is just LW and not all sliced and diced into many different versions.

Yeah, it's not simple.

I'm tempted to take a VERY CHEAP animation class just to qualify for a year or two of free C4D. --Can't be arsed to do the pirate thing. One gig and I could become an honest user.

**************

Competitive upgrade = $3, 320.25. I think the 25 is a nice touch.

The thing is, even with C4dL 'free' w/AE-CC, I still can't get excited to use it, esp when they leave out some of the more important features, like object export. (Bastards.)

Been using C4D Studio for a year now, and havent touched LW in that time except for the transitionning phase when modeling C4D seemed awkward. I now model only in C4D and sculpting tools, altough the sculpting in C4D is quite ok for many things. The thing is: the app suffers from the same syndromes every app suffers from, namely old and redundant code. Not everything is animatable, not every thing can easily be undone or reset. Granted, compared with LW its a whole other wold, but that only means the shortcomings are so much more apparent :D LW wins when it comes to get things done quickly, great material system, ease of use. Most things take me twice or three times longer, and the clicks are many more and in different places. But at the end of the day, You get accustomed to it as You get accustomed to LW.

See, I >>LOVE<< posts like this, because it's all too easy to see the grass as being greener across the fence. It takes a while to spot some shortcomings, and hearing about them makes the competition seem less unbeatable.

THANKS.
