Further to my photorealistic render attempts, I'm getting closer.. I tried a few other textures as well.

Tips greatly appreciated

We really need more info to help. Are you using nodes or layers for texturing? What's the lighting setup? HDRI? Reflection map? Caustics? AO?

Sure.

Using nodes for some, some are not using nodes.

The problem I'm having is with the surface textures.

I'm happy with the lighting, caustics are on.

I just haven't been able to get a realistic looking gold. If you have a look at the gold examples the gold is close, but not quite hitting the mark.

I just need a decent gold setup, and haven't been able to get it right.

Bevel your edges. Nothing has sharp edges like that and it will help make it look not so fake.

Be careful googling gold rings. To me it looks like most are 2D/3D renderings.

If you want photo real you need a backdrop to create the kind of lighting and reflections that lend it the real look, unless you do that it will forever look cg, the attached image is not great but it's HDR backdrop lends it the sort of look that we more readily associate with photo real

Yes, we covered that before the forum crash deleted half of this thread or more.
