From the Unity dox:

Importing native 3D formats requires the 3D application to be installed on the same computer as Unity. This is because Unity uses the 3D applicationís FBX exporter plug-in to read the file. Alternatively, you can directly export as FBX from your application and save into the Projects folder.

Well, that would be SWEET, as it would ease editing, but I'm wondering, does that actually work for Lightwave???

Yes, and very well !
Uses LightWave Applink for Unity.

RTFM :D

The sensitive point is to follow the steps, otherwise the "FBX" is not generated at all.

Can open multiple instances of the "Layout" to edit several "FBX" at the same time. I find it stunning and practical ;)
