Has anyone heard or willing to speculate whether there will be any NDI converter boxes by NAB.

Perhaps you are specifically looking for a "blackbox" hardware converter - of course an extra TriCaster Mini makes a handy 4 channel SDI to NDI converter.

In general, otherwise there is the NewTek NDI Connect software app to use 3rd party video interfaces to make NDI with a Windows PC.

There is also a Mac OSX version of the same sort of thing called NDI Source, and this should be available by NAB. NDI Source uses a BlackMagic Design Video interface with Mac OSX to convert your SDI/HDMI signal to an NDI IP Video stream. We are currently testing with a BMD UltraStudio Mini Recorder (Thunderbolt) and a MacMini and the results look excellent. Keep an eye on the website for news as it happens: http://sienna.tv/ndi

Yeah I was talking about a converter box to avoid having to run SDI. I figure cameras with NDI are at least a year away but a converter box (dongle) would be awesome.

I have been to your website before and really liked the tools I saw there. Is the IOS camera app going to be available in the near future? That could make a great camera for a sideline reporter.

I would love to see something like the BMD Camera Converter where there is an NDI-based box that mounts under the camera. It would carry video, return feed, intercom, some extra audio, etc... And just connect to a Cat5. Probably configured via master control software in the truck/control room to route the chosen return video feed and other options.

NDICam for iPhone is waiting for app review in the App Store, and we hope to have it approved in a few days.

Indeed, it does give a really unique perspective point of view, and it allows live switching between the front and rear cameras allowing the operator to interact with the the point of view.

I think you are going to love it. Just be prepared to need a fast and clean wifi network.

What's the cost going to be?

Probably no more than $99 - Price is still under review.

NDICam for IPhone looks really good. It will open up all kinds of opportunities.

@Zach - I agree with you on the search for a camera back. Unfortunately it is currently a bit harder to do than just a simple format conversion from SDI to HDMI or whatever. NDI needs some pretty serious hardware based processing. The closest thing to what we need is the Stagebox but it does not output NDI currently. Their pricing is pretty crazy too. Hopefully someone out there sees the brilliance in NDI and how it can change the camera end of production too.

We are currently just running a TriCaster mini BOB (Break Out Box) on the remote end and hooking cameras into it via SDI. Nice little compact solution. Maybe NewTek could deliver a stripped down version of the mini platform to just do NDI conversion?

Without getting all Inception about it, "No Comment" is a comment, isn't it?... ;)

Boy would that be a game changer for us. Not financially practical right now to pull fiber runs to all of our venues, but doing it over network sure would be! Now if only this fictitious box could pass tally and intercom and could arrive before August, I'd be one happy camper........

I'd hate to see anyone read too much into a non-comment ...

That's awesome great job.

I read the description do you have any specs on how individual iPhones do with processing? Does it need to be a 6s or 6s+?
Will it work at 720 at 30fps? Is there a trial version so we can test it out and determine if it works for our needs?
I think it's awesome and would be willing to pay the price but I want to make sure it works for what I need.

Thanks

Most of our internal development was with a 5S so you certainly dont need a 6. There is a quality vs frame rate slider so you can make an appropriate compromise to suit your phone power, and network performance.

There are 3 settings, top setting is full size (eg 1920x1080 or 1280x1080 depending on camera). The lower 2 settings basically scale to a smaller image so the compression speed and network data rate can cope with less resources.

As a rule full size will not give 30fps at 1920x1080 (currently...**) - however you might get full frame rate at 1280x1080.

In any case - the slider works really well and the testers are reporting full frame rates with the middle setting for the most part (which is about 50% scaling).

On the whole NDICam is really about creating a completely new paradigm - a small 'personal' broadcast camera with the ability to switch between the cameras (for example when interviewing someone) - its low latency and quality is great.

So far everyone who tries it seems to love it....

** Future updates in NDI will very likely speed things up in iOS and allow full HD at full frame rates.

Will you be offering an NDI Video Monitor type of solution for iOS?

We hope to, yes, although we have yet to check the decode performance on iOS with the current NDI Codebase. NDI is heavily accelerated on Intel Desktop CPUs and offers stunning efficiency, but the performance on ARM CPUs (eg iOS) is still being improved over time.

I am pretty optimistic (particularly long term), but we will have to wait a few more weeks to see how well it performs with the current NDI ARM code.
