Hello,

i would like to know how i can set the focus on a particular object on a scene, blurring the rest of the objects.

Any hint?

Camera panel, DOF tab (depth of field).

Camera panel, DOF tab (depth of field).

I tried several time, but it's hard for me. It's not so automatic, you should know the distance of an object and use a correct f-stop. There's a plugin or something that could do those things automatically?

Do it in post. Faster, easier and more control. LW can spit out all kinds of passes, but the one you will need for post work is "Depth" found in F8 "Compositing Buffer Export". Select "Depth" and then on the Object tab select all your objects. You can set it up to save the "depth' pass or just spit it out as part of your F9 image viewer. Then use your favorite comp app and it's blur filter. The posted video is for LW10 that shows "Buffer Export" which has been replaced in later versions of LW what I mentioned above, but the same basic principals apply.

That camera rig looks awesome! :+)

I used to use Relativity to calculate distance from Camera to a Null Object, but this is yet another broken thing in LW 2015.3. :-(

Quite why the LW DoF doesn't have a "Center focus on object" Drop down I really don't know. Setting up a null as a focus point is so much easier.
Also, it is worth mentioning the DoF you can achieve with DPonts filters. Very fast and easy to set up (and you can focus on a null too).

Ahh, useful! Thanks.
Still think LW should have a simple drop down though! :)

I just add a null, parent it to the Camera (turning off X and Y, so it only moves on the Z channel) and then set an envelope on the focal distance that follows the null's position. Then you only need to move the null to where you want focus to be.

Really glad I found this thread! I'd given up on getting good DOF but now I can do it :-) Thanks to Snosrap et al for sharing their knowledge.
