Not sure what to think of this, I think I saw somewhere that James cameron mentioned that non a single grass blade in avatar was real, all cg..
but then you look at this coverage and see it from above the set when shooting..and isnīt there real grass in that scene, someone is either lying, or maybe the grass in that scene is just plastic..and thus not real or they somehow replaced all that "real grass" with cg grass for the final movie?

Maybe I have misread the whole thing, maybe he said not a single blade is real..so wether or not if was fake plastic or cg is another matter.
0:45 in the clip we can see a shooting taking place with real actors on a set with on set grass, so the question is... if that is what ended up finally in the movie, or if they cg replaced every blade of grass..which I donīt believe.

Based on some previous interview with James Cameron..I thought he ment everything depicting grass in the movie was cg..but appearently not...so it may explain why the grass reacted so realistic when choppers hovering over them, I thought that must have been difficult to do with only cg.

i'm 95% sure that yep, that was in the movie.

they very likely put cg trees/grass additionally in the foreground/background.

basing this on the hundreds making-of videos i have seen...

...not a single grass blade in avatar was real
doubt it. he probably referred to the cg-only renders.
...or he said it as a marketing trick.

exactly what I thought too after seeing this, though the first thought doesnīt make any sense, why would he refer to cg scenes and mention that those images were not real grass, but pure cg?
a marketing trick is more likely though.

they must used real grass when real actors walks

not necessary, if they just tracked the feets either by motion trackers or manually, and put kinematic forces in those places..affecting the cg grass, but I think you are right anyway.
What struck me as a very good grass behaviour, that I really would be impressed with..if it were cg, that is the very scene I refer to, and when the chopper are landing and pushing the grass around in a swirling wind.

So now I am pretty convinced it was all real grass..in those scenes anyway, and the impress me factor was reduced a bit :)

Maybe I have been accusing the wrong guy here, I thought I had watched James Cameron saying this..but I may be wrong, perhaps I picked it up from here?...

Jim Gianopulos ...quoute..

"The film’s photo-realism was also important. Gianopulos said he still gets questions about which jungle was used as the basis for the environment. The answer, of course, is none.
“There’s not a single blade of grass in that film that’s real,” he said."

He's promoting a movie. People very often over state things while promoting or selling things.... He's also near the top of the food chain and likely watched the grass being added by some of the people near the bottom and that stuck in his head, that even the blades of grass needed to be added by cg. So It's just a bit of exaggeration. I don't think he was trying to put one over on people or lie.

Thatīs what I thought, itīs easy to deceive a mind who wantīs to be deceived, who said anything about cg, itīs just not real grass.

Heh. I tend to dismiss such blanket statements out of hand as mere hyperbole, either with a marketing agenda or from excitement fueling a lack of accuracy. The latter is my attempt not to judge too quickly, which is a fault I have. :D
