I've seen this done about a billion times and now I've been asked to take a flat map of the world and animate it into the globe as spins.

I did a search for tutorials etc, and found this
but couldn't make sense of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Um, start with a sphere in the bkgnd layer, and a flat box in the foreground, same number of points/polys.
Use endomorphs to set up morph targets of the various positions you want of the transition, gradually moving the points of the box into the position of the sphere.

You may need to play with the actual map surface as well, changing the graphic over time, but you'd notice that when you do your test rendering.
