Please add assorted tools for manipulating and displaying and organizing Nodes...with same hotkeys as Modeler:

Drag connected nodes (entire network of nodes moves): ctrl t
Dragnet (respects connectivity): ;
Magnet (does not respect connectivity): :
Fit all: a
Fit Selected: shift a
Select Connected: ]
Inverse Selection: "
Hide Selected: -
Hide Unselected: =
Inverse Hide: |
Unhide all: \
Expand Selection: }
Shrink selection: {
Zoom in: >
Zoom out: <
Zoom in x 2: shift >
Zoom out x 2: shift <
Zoom tool (draw out box): ctrl q

Plus, mouse navigation for Pan and Zoom exactly like modeler

The modeler paradigm is fast and fluid and would work well here.

Also, I would like selection sets and to the ability to save favorites that store node position and visibility and such (ie. when certain nodes are positioned or hidden or expanded or collapsed for convenient editing).

Nice idea! Configurable shortcuts are more important than fixed tho. On international keyboards brackets and other symbols are sometimes in very uncomfortable places or need an alt/shift key.

I would love an improvement to the compound node functionality, just drag out a selection box over the nodes you want to compound and hit a key, and it creates a compound with all appropriate inputs and outputs without having to set them up by hand.
