Pixar intends to release its Universal Scene Description software (USD) as an open-source project by summer, 2016. The toolset addresses the need in the CG film and game industries for an effective way to describe, assemble, interchange and modify high-complexity virtual scenes between digital content creation tools employed by studios.

AKA. The Marvel Cinematic Universe Tool.

"We're using almost every VFX company on the fricken planet, and THEY don't have a way to keep all these scenes straight. Let alone give those scenes to someone else so that they are useful. What can we...! Wait! I have an idea..."

aka. Star Wars Tool.

The We're Making a Star Wars Movie every year from now until the end of time, let's change the industry to our liking. (I hear the imperial march around this)
