View Full Version : What's the lowest increment a weight map can support?

This may not matter practically, but what's the smallest increment a weight map can differentiate between two points?

0.01%? 0.001%?

Also, are there plugins that will apply arbitrary functions on a weightmap to get specific varying values?

The experimental scene file attached seems to indicate it's 4 digits of accuracy in LW 11.6.4. So, 50.0001 can be differentiated from 50.0, and shows as 50.0001% in the Point Info page. The gradient colors for more than 4 digits don't seem reliable. 50.00001 is textured differently from 50.0001, but not reliably, and it's shown as 50.0% in the Point Info page.

Video tutorial how to mix weight maps in Node Editor, to get yet another weight map

(user can use node to generate completely new vmap without input vmap)

Weight maps are float 32 bit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-precision_floating-point_format

23 bits per fraction,
2^23 = 8388608,
1/8388608 = 0.00000011920928955078125
100% = 1.0
So steps will be 0.000011920928955078125%
(probably 10x of that more reliable assumption)

I stand correct, thanks Sensei. I had the texture / gradient set up incorrectly for the higher precision values.

Thanks everybody for your insights into this matter.

Wow, "WEIGHT POLYGON GROUPS" is very impressive.
