I find it difficult to believe but: is there NOT a "Save Object COPY" in LWM?

The reason you want a "Save {file} COPY" is to

save a temporary version
avoid disrupting a Layout Scene with a currently in-use LWO
run a copy off to send to another user
join the crowd of other programs offering this function.

Even LAYOUT has "Save Object COPY". Shouldn't Modeler???

That's why I made these:
Duplicate Object
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz-UDj8hYYY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDpwxf1f7hE
(it keeps layers and names intact)

and Save Object Copy As..
It is calling internally my Duplicate Object tool.
No sense showing, you can imagine how it works.

And there is also version for layers:

Each layer, independent object in specified folder.

If you join it with Parts To Layers

or Surfaces To Layers

You can quickly disassemble complex object to dozen/hundred objects, if needed.
