View Full Version : Conbining many .lwo files into a single object file?

I found a related thread from 2005 that referenced plugins that either no longer can be found or do not work in 2015.2 so rather than necropost I decided to start a new thread.

I have several hundred .STL files that I am able to mass import into Layout then, by saving all objects, end up with a pile of small .lwo files. Now I want to bring them all (or subsets of them) into Modeler as layers, in essence merging many .lwo files into one. There are simply far, far too many such files to consider opening each one by one and copy/pasting them into one object file by hand.

Does there exist a method for this that works in LW 2015.2? Flay.com is no more, and the Dstorm .p plugin that might have done so from the .lws file appears no longer to be compatible with LW. The other stuff I found refrenced just points to dead links.

This was the old thread I found:

http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?34195-combining-objects-layers-into-a-single-object

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

So, I was able to locate the Collapse Object plugin but that has its own problems. I cannot select "from dir" as it will not accept a directory as the selection, only a single .lwo file. I did that then manually edited the directory string so it stopped at the parent directory but the result was it said there were no files there. The files are there and I can open them individually so they are valid objects.

Then I tried opening a large subset of the objects, and using the plugin with the all loaded option. That just crashes Modeler to desktop.

Near as I can tell Collapse Obj is severely broken. Guess it's time to submit a bug report.

Confirmed. Immediate crash when collapsing to single object.

Cool. I just tried the first one and it appeared to have saved the objects but I wasn't asked for a name or location to save to and I can't seem to find any resulting object. Either it failed or put the file somewhere I haven't thought to look. I'll work on that.

Just downloaded the second file, thanks again.

NT support just told me the workaround to get to work in directory mode. It still crashes in all loaded mode. They suggested that might be memory related but I'm on a 6 core New Mac Pro with 32GB of memory installed so I doubt that. This is what they suggested that got the plugin working for me:

When you choose the directory - I had to choose a file "in" that directory, then remove the object from the path. So I started with:

/Users/MyUser/Desktop/test/001.lwo

and removed the 001.lwo to make the directory:

/Users/MyUser/Desktop/test/

Then ... I made sure to name the output file - the "new collapse object" - don't leave it as *.lwo -- name it - and I made sure that it pointed to a valid directory - again, I chose

/Users/MyUser/Desktop/test/All.lwo

I believe there's a Modeler script that you run after running the Layout one. The Modeler one will load what Layout exported.

Ah. This is where I slap my forehead and exclaim, "D'oh!"

Many thanks again. As ever, this community rocks.

I only loaded about 5 puny objects, so it shouldn't be memory related. If it is, it's got serious issues.

It's pretty cool to be able to go into the PDF, make a sticky about this feature with this thread's URL, to flag it for future reference.
