View Full Version : Ok, i am new and stuck

Ok, this is all new to me, and I am learning. (any learning resources anyone recommends?). I am terribly stuck.

I created a new polygon by making it via bezier curves. The basic problem I am having is I want it to fill inside, and not me just a stroke. Meaning, when I want to extrude the polygon, I dont want it to extrude according to the path, but the fill (inside). I am not getting the indicator which shows which way the polygon is facing as well. After I did the shape with the bezier curve, I closed the shape (weld) and then did MAKE POLY. When I go to extrude tool, it extrudes the path (like outline of the shape).

Any help is much appreciated! Also, anything you can recommend to someon ewho is new to lightwave and 3d in general! Thanks,

You want to Freeze the curve (Ctrl-d) which should convert the curves into a poly. Then extrude it...

I think I know what you're doing.

1. you drew a bezier shape

2. you connected the points in a clockwise order and hit "p"(make polygon)

3. you go to extrude it, however it appears as if you just extruded the outline.

The reason it'll do that sometimes is because you may have extruded the shape the wrong direction.
Try extruding it in the opposite direction and you'll see that it will appear to be a solid pice. Or another solution is to do a "shift f" (smooth shift) and that will also extrude it as a solid object.

then do a weld - it'll weld all the points that you extrded in to one point, which will look sort of like a pie cut... If you are trying to sort of put an end on a cylinder like you'd see in an aluminum can that's the way to do it... if you want more of a curvey look, extrude all the points, then resize the ring of points to a smaller area, etc.

thanks for your replies. Wow, I am so amatuer at this, but I am trying to be persistant. I did extrude the other way, and it worked! But then I tried something else, which I haven't been able to get to work either.

Imagine I have a extruded square, with another extruded shape inside , about 2 inches less in diameter. I am trying to get the other extruded square inside it "cut out" from the larger square, so I have a hole. LIke punch it out. I saw and read about the boolean function, subtract, but that doesnt seem to work. I hope this makes sense to someone.

The object is something like a round corner beveled square, punched out in the center with an odd shape.

Thanks for your replies. I really appreciate it. I've been using the Lightwave 3D 7.5 visual quickstart Guide book. I have another by Dan Alban as well. I hope I can catch up on this!

Hi alexis,

I don't know how to answer your question, but I've found that a small screenshot posted here will help people see your problem.

The easiest way to do that is to push the 'Print Scrn' button to capture a screenshot of your monitor (with the problem on the screen, and you won't see anything happen but the screenshot has been captured)

EDIT - Or better yet Alt-PrintScrn to get just the active window.

then open Paint (Start - Programs -Accessories - Paint) then Edit - Paste. Then cut out just the part you want to show, create a new file, and Paste. You can Skew that even smaller, and save as a PNG file which is pretty small to upload.

Good point. Here it is. I basically want the inner shape knocked out of the outer shape. so it would have a hole in the middle.

It sounds like you want to do a BOOLEAN. Put your hole object in a background layer and the object you want the hole cut into in the foreground layer and hit shft b (boolean). Do a subtract.
Also make sure that the cutting object thats in the background layer extends longer then the object in the foreground layer.

Boolean is in the Manual, don't forget to check there to help figure things out. I learned all the basics using nothing but the manual.

list some... another really good resource is http://www.3dbuzz.com - become a member for free and you can then download the vtms (Video Training Magazines) - which are basically a bunch of really cool tutorials that walk you through the basics - you need divx to watch em, but they are totally cool!
