It was a really excellent event. Great to see what other professional artists are doing with Lightwave. It was also great to put faces to forum personas.

Fantastic event support by Anthony Hall and the college staff. And it was amazing to see a whole bunch of student designers eager to see what LW can do.

Many thanks to Vision West Nottinghamshire College and Create Theater. had excellent day, and thanks to Staff and students of for hosting this brilliant event.
met loads of people:-

met Johnathan Alenskas, Snr visual effects supervisor at darkside studios.
who advocated the use of LW generalist - basically get involved in all aspects of LW
Gave a demo of setting up realistic lighting workflow with EXR images.

met Duncan Hewitt again! (this being 2nd time in only 10 years!) - from Albino igil 2d/3d design
Amazing breadth of work that's been covered over the years - was interesting to see a potted history
of LW developed features which are apparent in his work over the years.

met Ali Miah Director Painting Pixels - this guy should be on NewTek commission - passionate LW-aver

met Andrew Otter CGI services at JCB.

met Steve Gathercole - Curriculum manager at Vision west - who promised to the event will happen again next year

didn't get to meet Anthony Hall - maybe next time

met Lino Grande Content maker for NewTek - shook his hand (I had an urge to bow down and shout 'I'm not worthy' but didn't, thankfully)
Great guy and really made the event buzz, just by being there - only thing he would give away is the promise of exiting
new developments coming soon to LW.

And finally got to have a pint afterwards - many thanks again

regards Kev

Looked like another winner, please, oh pretty please can we see some video's if anyone has them. Wish I could have been there.

T-Shirts, where there any I noticed Lino had a nice LW one, would be nice to have a shop at LWG3D to buy T-Shirts, Mugs, Ball caps, stickers, these sort of things promote LW more than you would imagine.

Lets do one in Spain, its hot here and cool in the pool.

It was an amazing event. I was blown away by all of the work on show, and there was a huge amount of mutual respect for all of the artists both presenting and hiding in the audience! One of the really nice things about this event was the venue was perfect, they had technicians who helped us, and they filmed it all. There was a couple of glitches, but I was so very pleased it all (technically) went without a hitch. I had visions of it going horribly wrong! If you're going to organise an event like this, doing it with and for students i a great way to do it, as well as getting together all of the local artists in the area!

Dear Tony,
Thank you very much for a fix
of LightWaveness on Monday,
& a very, nicely constructed buffet.
You get Gaggia Coffee machine
for next year, and i'll move in.

But seriously,after too long
a time of no LW exposure
in the U.K., it was a very
smooth affair. Till next time

P.S. I was thinking of comping a JCB glowing engine

roof, but I had no LW with me in on the plane.... Doh!

you actually ran out the door with that winning ticket as well ... the deaf girl had no chance ;) , Andrew I meant to speak with yourself a little longer however beer was involved.

it was more regarding your workflow and use of the presets, do you actually use the presets ? lol .

pleasure meeting you , in fact I extend that to everyone .

-----

It was Epic and on every level...

The college knocked it out of the park, right down to the sign interpreter *excellent student support btw* and probably the first LW convention I have seen in sign language.

The guys who all spoke nailed it and showed why LightWave is and can be a Killer application

the presentations and work displayed was top quality, it give Siggy a run for it's money without all that jazz , it was on a personal level and at the core, it was about the Users and Potential 3D Artist learning #education.

in my honest opinion LW needs a proper UK and EUROPE headquarters with a huge FORKIN budget ! see Tim Jenison * because we need more of this , it rocked!

Lino and his wife represented LW in the most professional manner, on questioning at the end he answered honest and as a company are fully aware what is needed to be done and gave hope... "not your usual marketing BS you see from most companies " and on a personal level I made great friends with absolutely everyone.

plus did I mention there was beer!

madno

Sound like the event was a good one for you who were there.
Did they mention what the intention of this event was? Is the UK a growing market for LW3DG? Or are those college events internationally percived in the DCC community?

kopperdrake
07-23-2015, 03:20 AM
The guys here have nailed it really - it was a great opportunity for us old(er)'uns to show what you can do with LightWave, and the stsudents' passion is infectious. My only regret is I didn't get enough time between the talks to see the student demos they were giving in the communcal eaty/drinky/chatty area. There were too many old faces to see again or faces to put avatars too!

As far as what the event was about - that college has been using LW since the start, and quietly bobbing away in the background doing so. I'm only 45 minutes from them but had no idea they existed, and as a creative college they really are switched on. Anthony worked his arse off, kudos to you fellah for pulling it off

It was an absolute pleasure meeting all the other speakers, and the motley crew that is the LW fraternity - it really brings home the breadth of talent and work that is within and possible with LW. Buy by 'eck that pint was needed at the end!

What Lino did say, and I'm sure I can say this else he wouldn't have said it, was that anyone wanting an educational license (or licenses) for <cough>free<cough> should call NewTek directly - they're quite open to talking.

To me that was a massive statement, but any colleges wanting to use it could do nothing better than contacting Anthony Hall at Vision West Nottinghamshire College and seeing how they do it.

He also mumbled other stuff but I really can't be sure because beer was flowing, suffice to say I'm quite excited about LW's future :) And damnit he can bear hug!

Tobian also gives a mean hug - the beer defintely put strength into people! He also mentioned BeeVee proof read his script - I mean *Ben Vost* proof read his script! Sorry - for me it was just amazing sitting and chatting with so many people I have so much respect for, over a pint. Ben is someone I read as a 'yoof' when I was starting out - it all felt slightly so surreal. Gary, my colleague (and very good friend), was blown away by how nice everyone he met was - it's the first time he's encountered that LW community 'thing' - and I'm glad to see it's still alive and kicking - the passion for a particular way of creating 3D goodness and, more importantly for me, the willingness to *share* techniques and experiences. That is a rare commodity in today's world.

I just have to end on, if you get the chance to go to the next one, do it. It's just plain fun! Personally I hope Vision West Notts do it every year, with more casual demos people can walk up to and watch, or those who've been doing it for years can be quizzed and show techniques at a LW station.

Waves of light
07-23-2015, 04:03 AM
just adding to the 'LW community thing' as it was something Andrew and I touched on whilst having after event drinks. I believe the reason why the LW community is so nice and willing to share experiences and knowledge, is the fact we all want LW to do well and to be more visible in the industry. People using the 'bigger' software packages tend not to share as much as maybe they are worried that will give too much of an advantage to another user.

I'm hoping that the students also understood the advantage of LW over other software packages, a message that was reiterated by nearly all the speakers. And the work on display clearly showed what can be achieved with LW, in the right hands.

And again, a big round of applause for Anthony and the staff at the college. I would certainly go to the next one. Maybe next time you can use our skills and have us sat at terminals (like in the area where we had coffee) doing demos and run throughs of certain projects.

Yes, I think why this event worked is it created a critical mass of lightwavers, that it got everyone else wanting to come and meet them. It was quite amusing to me how people came up to me, professing their awe for what I did, and I am standing there thinking 'not worthy' :). Lots of very talented, down to earth people freely spreading ideas and help.

And yes I would have liked to have spent more time with the students too, as I was too busy being excited about meeting all the LightWave Community. As I've said to the people there, I think it would be a better idea if they broke up the lecture hall with shorter tutorials, so we could explain what we were talking about in smaller (less intimidating) groups, or show more complex things. I'd be happy to do that.

So sorry I couldn't make it this year. I'm so pleased it went so well (not that I'm surprised!) and I look forward to a similar, bigger, event next year :)

All the best,

B

Iv'e worked for Schools and I have seen some really good establishments over the years, but I honestly mean this regarding the Nottingham creative campus, it's probably one of the best I have ever seen...

the facilities are amazing and I wish I had they resources.

Anthony and his team blew it out the water.

During the awesome Darkside animation presentation he mentioned a different and better way to composite a shadow pass. Does anyone know what he did? I couldn't quite figure it out and couldn't see the screen.

Yes I believe what he explained was rather than multiplying your shadows to your bg plate, you should use the shadow pass as an alpha mask and use an adjustment layer, such as exposure. I do this with my irradiance falloff as it looks a lot nicer.

Hi there :D

Ill tell you myself ! basically do not multiply a black shadow over your plate. Instead, use the alpha or color as a matte and grade the shadow onto the plate. I use levels myself, pulling the white slider down to get the shadopw darkness and then if need be curves to introduce color tint.
