I am trying to build a few lightbeams in my scene, but I am missing something.

I did a search and found this thread:

I downloaded the zip file near the bottom and tried to replicate the beam, in my own scene.

It didn't seem to work properly for me.. can someone give me a few tips to follow to achieve this effect please. (I am a beginner)

What I was doing before, is, I used a cone-shaped polygon to create the light, but I started running into problems with the object actually casting shadows.
